Sounds like you have an issue with the brew drive motor. Could be the wire going to the motor or the motor itself.

When the alert came up- Brew unit blocked- this is before you started taking things apart, A, were you able to remove brew unit, Yes or No?
B, after turning power on and then off, Did the machine try to reset brew unit to home position Yes or no?
If Yes were you able to remove brew unit?

open the door and see small screw in the middle of the brew unit. Take it off with small screwdrive and pull out the brew unit.Then put the small thing (something like a pipe) to the brew unit with the small screw. Then without brew unit in the machine press the switch inside the machine where stayin the brew unit and the switch witch is stayin the top of door .Switch on the machine and wait while self test is making,then put the brew unit in the machine and that it.Enjoy!

I had the same issue. Very difficult to fix. You must remove brew unit and reset the machine while apart. You must trick the machine to think brew unit is installed and door closed. Look at door and brew unit and use screwdriver or butter knife to engage machine and run through cycle to reset.

Does the brew unit try to move at all? You can listen for the motor, or open the door panel and defeat the safety interlock while it's operating. (Be careful not to put a finger in there.) Then you can observe where the brew unit is getting stuck.

First clean the screen and tube on the brew unit, then lube the guides/gear grooves on the brew unit, also lube the o-ring(big red one). Then that should take care of it. You can also try backwashing/degreasing the brew unit if the machine has a preground chute.

Try cleaning and relubing the brew unit.
If that fails you require a new main board.

Check the shower screen on the brew unit.

For Brew Unit Block:

• Turn Off
• Hold small coffee & hot wate atthe same time
• Turn on with light (numbers sill appear)
• Hold medium coffee util arm returns to normal position

If when you first turn it on and it does not go through the self test and then says brew unit blocked. You may have a wire loose on the board, (common) The motor that drives the unit may be bad. In either case you should have a professional look at it. Google saeco repair and have choose an authorized saeco repar center.
