I've just opened an excel file i use regularly and it goes straight to the text import wizard and all words/figures are unrecognisable characters. I can't seem to get back to the original file format. All other excel files are correct.
Try opening the file from the Excel File/Open menu rather than double clicking to open it. If that does not work try Importing from it into a new blank spreadsheet.
