No cold water comes out of one of our bathroom shower

We have a shower in the daylight basement of our 2007 built home that has never been used as it was a guest bathroom. Our son has decided to move downstairs and found that the water coming out of the shower faucet is hot only... there is no cold water even if we run it for 10 minutes. What would cause this problem and how do we fix it?

Obviously your plumber when they were building the home hooked up hot water lines to both faucets and never hooked up a cold water line.

Can you get to the piprwork feeding the shower?, if so then:

Most shower units now have in-line isolator valves fitted for service purposes my guess is that someone forgot to turn it to the on position.

It looks like a normal compression joint but in the centre there is a slotted screwhead which should be turned to be in line with the water flow.

Worst case scenario is that they have fitted non-return valves the wrong way around on the cold supply line

Should i use the same drywall in the bathroom as in the rest of the house?

I recommend using MR (Moisture Resistant) drywall for the bathroom, and possibly for the basement if there are moisture issues. It is not much more expensive, and it can save you a big headache later

FAN AND COMPRESSOR START. HUMIDITY SET AT 30, ALWAYS RUNS. NO WATER IS CONDENSED. PAIL STAYS EMPTY. CLEANED FRONT AND BACK OF COILS, REALLY ONLY FINS,CAN'T GET TO COILS WITHOUT HAVING TO DO A...

Rather than have you disassemble the cabinet to get to the coils, I want you to do an "At Home Test".

Move the dehumidifier to a bathroom that has a shower. Plug it in, Turn it ON and set the humidity level at 30%. Turn the shower on to medium hot (enough to generate some steam. Do Not turn On the bathroom exhaust fan. As you leave the bathroom close the door. Wait 15 minutes and return to the bathroom. Turn the shower OFF and inspect the unit's water collection bucket for water. If you find any, the unit is working as it should. If you don't find any water, it may be that the humidity sensor has failed or the air intake filter is clogged. In which case, remove the filter and clean it. If it's the sensor, unless you are really DIY savy, I'd recommend buying a new dehumidifier. As finding the part (your unit was made by Fedders), the cost of the part and the labor involved, to me, out ways repairing it.

Now, on the positive side ... If you saw water in the bucket after the bathroom test. It may simply be, that at this time, there is not enough humidity in the room air (even at 30%) to trigger the sensor. If the unit is in a basement, the air temp (60 degrees or lower) will affect it. As the temperature at floor level (where the unit is) is 5 to 8 degrees colder than the air temperature. Dehumidifiers don't work well in cold temperatures.

Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.

I have a 40 gal Whirlpool single element 3500 mobile home hot water heater. I have replaced the element thermostat high pressure valve (because it was leaking) & flushed for sediment. In morning I wash...

A 40 gal. electric water heater will give you aprox. 32 gal. of hot water in one setting, since they do not reheat as quickly as gas. So if you are using a newer 1.5 or 2.0 gpm shower head. You could take a 16 minute shower with straight hot water. If you are running 2 new shower heads at once you could get 8 minutes. If you using the tub spout the times decrease. Some of my customers like to turn up the temerature on the thermostat a little so they can mix more cold and get it to last a little longer. Be very careful doing this.
If your water heater has a lot of calcium built up in it the times will decrease.
With out seeing the heater, you mention it is a mobile home heater so I am guessing that it is bottom fed.
I hope this has helped.

Hot water dosen't come out.

hot water supply is probably turned off. Is it a rental or did you buy the place? Does it have a crawl space or a basement? Where is your water heater? Start at the water heater and trace the line to the shower. There may be a valve in between that has been shut off. Good luck.

No cold water from bathroom tap

Sounds like you need to replace your shower valve, especially if this is the only fixture in the house being affected. You could try to replace the cold water cartridge first. Hope this helps
