Question about Panasonic Toughbook 28 Notebook

1 Answer

Color Display on Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 is dull

My toughbook must have a transreflective screen because I can see my screen when sunlight is lighting it up. Indoors, however, the colors are dull--blue is teal, red is pink etc. When I use it indoors it is plugged in with the correct voltage adapter. I have tested it with an external monitor and the colors are perfect on that monitor, but not on the toughbook. What can I do to have the colors just as bright indoors as outdoors? This is not under warranty, so "Customer Service" is not an option. Thanks.

My toughbook does not exhibit any of the defective backlight symptoms listed. An external monitor's display has perfect colors. The display shows colors that aren't as good.

I did connect an external monitor at the same time and the colors were brighter on that monitor compared to the toughbook. The lcd, however, does not have the problems as stated in the symptoms of a defective backlight. The colors are dull--blue a teal or turquoise, the bright green is a pea green and red is a pink. The screen is easy to see even with the lights out. If I look at the screen from a different angle the colors almost look normal. The problem is noticable in the bios because the bright blue is teal.

If the unit has been sitting awhile turned off this issue will arise with some CF-28 models. You will need to leave the monitor on continuously for at least a week and the screen will return to normal.

You most likely have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :-
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display or appear black.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

If the video image on the external monitor is normal and doesn't shown any color defects then the video card is OK and the fault is the LCD screen or the video cable/connector, Try reseating the video cable/connector.

If reseating the connector does not fix the problem, then the cost of replacing the LCD screen may not be a cost effective solution depending the age of your computer.

The cheapest alternative is to use the laptop with an external monitor.

If you decide to get a new laptop then you can use the hard disk from the old laptop and put it into a USB hard drive adapter case and use it as a portable hard drive.

Cantdisplay pic from pc to tv

To use a Panasonic Toughbook CF52 model
on a TV, you require a TV with a VGA Port.
The VGA port is a 15-pin female connector,
usually BLUE in color and you will require
a MALE-MALE VGA Cable which is also
BLUE color on the two ends.

The Panasonic has to be shut-off and the
cable connected to both the Toughbook and
the TV. Turn the TV on first and set SOURCE
on the TV Remote to "PC".

Then turn on the Panasonic Toughbook CF52.
If everything is properly connected then it
should switch automatically to the external TV.

I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 Mk III P3 1Ghz 512Mb Ram , I have installed a brand new DVD rom Drive in the MP Bay it reconises in bios also reads upon first post however, will not boot from any os cd...

Some bios menu allows you to boot from USB. (Some are locked this option by makers.)

Run safety mode and try again to see whether your DVD rom is working.

Best way will be go to device manager; go to properties of DVD rom; go to driver and click roll back driver.

If this is not working (in case), uninstall driver and reinstall it.

    Toughbook LCD is Dark.

On all Panasonic Toughbooks, any model pre-2008/2009 would have the older LCD screen with an "inverter". The new screens are called LED because there is no inverter.
The inverter is like the "ballast" on a fluorescent tube lighting fixture. The tube could be good but if the ballast is blown then the tube will not "light-up". This is also true of the inverter.
You can also tell when the inverter is about to burn-out when you first start your toughbook in the morning and the screen is initially "red" and then turns white after the unit warms-up for a few minutes.
    Good Luck to you.
