just bought a 1 TB My Book and have the same problem. Is there no way around this?

  • joshbob Apr 02, 2009

I have My Book 1Tb, When attempting to transfer files larger than 5 gigs I get an error prompt.  Please advise me.  No instruction is included in the package. I am working off of an imac with plenty of power. Not that that should make a difference.

Try converting from FAT32 to NTFS. That should take care of the problem. Check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314097/EN-US/ for the XP instructions.

Fat32 cannot recognize large files. Format your HDD as NTFS. That should solve.

Converting the Table From FAT32 to NTFS will affect the degree of compatibility of the HD with other systems ! And Once you're in NTFS there's no going back !

The drive is most likey formatted MS-DOS, FAT16. The file size limit is 4GB, and that may not include indexing. Is the file itself that big, or a folder or collection of folders in a file. Is this file video?

No, the single file size is just that. COmpressing the video is the only option, which may affect the desired outcome on the video quality. WHat computer/OS are you working in?

Well, youve reached the file limitation size....there's nothing else I can recommend. its like asking to escape gravity. 4GB is the file limit. I resolved your issued. its that youre handing files too large to transfer with that method. Making the file smaller ( compressing ) is not an option. I do this all the time, except in the macintosh logic pro/final cut realm, in this OS extended format, there are no file size limits.

SOURCE: cant download large files to my book

The controller board in Mybook might not support files over 4 gb. Check with the manufacturer if there are any new drivers for you product to solve your dilema. You could also just buy a cheap external case for the drive in the mybook and swap it out. None of the new cases have these limitations and you can get them online for less than 20 bucks. I like MAD Dog cases myself. I hope this helps you.

I can't transer file sizes more than 4 GB... What I've done to get around this is save my movies in multiple parts to make each file size smaller. Is there something I need to be able to transfer my files...

This will be a limitation of file size imposed by your operating system and drive format method. For drives formatted under FAT16 (2Gb) or FAT32 (4Gb - 2 bytes). FAT64 allows up to 16Zb while NTFS and NTFS5 both allow any size up to the actual volume capacity so with a 500Gb drive the max would be 500Gb for 1 file. I would therefore suggest that you retrieve all your stored data on the drive and reformat it with NTFS. Then you can have 1 continuous file instead of lots of 4Gb files.

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

If it's a Windows system, if your drive is formatted for the FAT32 file system, the limit for a single file is 4GB. Convert it to NTFS using Windows as follows:

Cannot copy large files onto my WD passport

Your drive is probably in FAT32 format.  FAT32 has a 4GB file limit that is why your 5GB movie isn't saving.  You will have to format the drive in Mac OS file format (HFS) using Disk Utility.
Unfortunately once its in Mac format the drive will not be recognized by windows PCs.  What I do is have a program called macdrive installed on my windows computers so that they can access mac format hard drives.
i hope this helps!
