Error Msg: A disk read error occured.

Hi,I'm in HK now. Lat year I purchased an Asus EeePC 900 that originally ran on Linux but I told them to install WinXP on it first which they did. After a few use, it all suddenly went black w/ only an error message 'A disk read error occured. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart'. I did what the msg said several times to no avail. I ran the recovery disc and it went back to Linux. However, I liked working with Windows so I brought it back to the shop and they fixed it but it took them more than a month to do so. Just a few days ago, the same problem occured with the same error message. It's totally unusable. I want to bring it back again to the shop but I'm afraid it'll take more than a month again before they fix it. Please can you help me? Is there anything I can do?

Thanks to leecom72 and obwhon. I really appreciate your help. It was under warranty period when I took it to the Asus shop here in HK. It took them a month coz they told me they changed the mainboard. I can't understand when they did what they had to do and still the same problem occured. Have I done something wrong myself? All I was doing was open the WMP before it went all black.

Hi there.
It took them a month to install XP!!!!!!!
It should have been done within 24 hours.
Have you any warranty on the laptop at all? if you have you must take advantage of that and send it in for repair as it sounds to me like the solid state hard drive may be corrupt.

To be honest with i doubt they have even changed the motherboard, if they have then its a generic fault with the motherboard itself.
You have done nothing wrong at all because of the error message you receive.
If you have to take it back and complain that it's doing exactly the same as before, demand your money back or ask for a replacement laptop not of the same model.

WEll i don't know how they fixed it before but if you get a disc read error then it's a bad hard drive. They may have gotten it to read again but it's still a bad hard drive and needs to be replaced and a new one put in. Don't know if they charged you for a bad hard drive before but it doesn't sound like they replaced it. Get a new drive and re-install your operating system and it should be fine.

Hi, I bought DELL INSPIRON 1545 in India two years back... now i am experiencing a trouble in it... It says the following error occurred: Error Code: 0146 Msg: Error Code 2000-0146 Msg: Hard Drive 0...

ok, the good news, the bad news, and the ugly.
Good news: buy a replacement hard drive and you should be good to go. Bad news: data recovery on a failed drive is a crapshoot at best- there are ways to try and recover, but they are stopgap (and cheap) or mostly reliable (and freaking EXPENSIVE)
Ugly: buy an external cage to install the hard drive, use a boot cd of Linux ( I've had better luck pulling files from NTFS drives using Linux than another install of Windows. Go figure....) and put the hard drive in a freezer bag- **** ALL AIR OUT OF THE BAG!. Put drive in freezer for 48 hours.
Pray. Pray hard. Pray harder still. Put drive in external cage, attach to linux system. Pull as much info as you can. Hopefully you can snag your important files- but that error is a pretty gnarly drive error.

Try Linux Ubuntu Version 10.04 for netbooks... Or the stable 9.10. You can easily create a bootable USB flash drive to test BEFORE fully installing.

I have an asus eeepc 900. i have an error message

hi charmed4031this netbook comes with an internal harddisk on which windows is installed but lacks any optical drives so far.
You will have to get an external CD/DVD-drive plus a Windows-CD for it from which you safely can reinstall windows or replace the missing file. Please find out which windows version you are using(Win200, Win XP Home for e.g.,), lend or buy this external drive, connect devices and let the computer work it's magic, if still facing diffifculties, you know where to find us ;-)

There is a Win XP recovery disc for the unit. You could call Asus and request the XP Recovery CD or you could try checking torrents, newsgroups, etc. for "eeepc xp recoverydisc"
