I have found when the camera is too close to the object it will not take the picture. Try backing up just a little bit and taking the shot again. This is most frustrating as I would like to get closer to my objects to take pictures. I was told I needed a lens with more zoom as when I get too close it doesn't allow the light to filter properly not allowing the camera to take the picture. Hope this works for you.

What mode are you shooting in? if in manual, your shutter speed is to slow and your photos are probably overexposed. or if you are in one of the program modes you probably have exposure compensation turned up very high. so turn down your exposure compensation down by holding the button that has a plus and a minus on it and turn so that it is set to 0

You cannot take a picture when your camera has not been focused yet. This is done by pointing your selected focus point on your subject, then click the shutter button halfway / half-pressed until you here a beep or see a dot on the lower left portion of your viewfinder. Once you have locked your focus, press the shutter button all the way down to take the shot.

It might have just happend due to recent update of your system

so the solution would also be another update

but before that go to the device manager , locate other devices and right click on it and click on update drivers, restart the system, if that works its fine else go on to the following link and download the latest version of the Nikon Software

Have you ever cleaned the contacts on the lens and the camera body where they meet? If not, do so now with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

I don't believe there is. Nikon call it Live View in other models, but its not mentioned in the D40 user manual.....

here's the full manual, if you'd like it.

Nikon d40 motnior blank while taking picture.

That's entirely correct. Live view cannot work on SLR's whilst the photo is being taken due to the requirement for the mirror and live view sensor to flip out of the way during image capture.

Live view on SLR cameras is a misleading description, it's really a live preview instead.

Picture transfer from internal memory

Your D40 has no internal memory. The camera can take a shot, and even show you the image on the LCD, but is not actually saved anywhere, unless a memory card is present. There is a way to prevent the camera from firing without a card. It is in the setup menus.
