Oven does not maintain temp and shuts off

Whirlpool gas range model SF388PEWWO. The oven will light and reach temperature. Then when needing to re light to maintain temp the igniter will not come on and the oven goes off. I have replaced ignitor but still have same problem. Should I replace the DSI board or gas shut off valve?

If there is a failure re-lighting the oven it will cool down, but should not turn off. If the oven shuts off and you have to restart the oven controls you will need the main control board.

SOURCE: wHIRLPOOL Sup Cap 465 oven turns on for 3 sec, then shuts off

The flame sensor is dirty or bad.

When the unit does not sense flame after ignition, the gas valve shuts down the system.

They can become corroded or dirty, but usually just need to be replaced.

Contact whirlpool for warranty info. If the unit is under warranty, they should send you the parts for free. If not, they can direct you in how to order the part.

Oven will not reach desired temperature and slight gas smell

Just had same problem it was nice it waited until christmas dinner, all i did to resolve the problem was switch the upper broiler igniter with the lower one for the oven. I tuned on the oven & it fired right up i never use the broiler on my oven so itll buy me some time. So if you can get the broiler to light try that but i did have the same low temp. & the smell of gas. Good Luck

Oven does not maintain a consistent temperature

Is this oven gas or electric? If it is gas then it can be normal to see 30 to 50 degrees difference in tempature. The tempature in a gas oven works on the average tempature. For example: The oven tempature may rise all the way up to 370 degrees. Then the burner will shut off. And then the tempature can drop all the way to 330 degrees. Then take 330 and add that to 370 then divide that number by two and the average tempature will be 350. If your oven is electric then the tempature should be much more consistant but can have a 10 to 15 degree variance. Also the standard oven tempature guage that you put in the oven or even the temp guage built into the oven are not very accurate. We us a Fluke meter with a thermocouple to calibrate an oven. So to check your oven for proper tempature regulation you will first need to let the oven pre-heat for about 15 minutes. Then place the thermocouple in the center of the oven. If the oven is electric the take a temp reading every 5 minutes and average them out. If the oven is gas then you will need to take a temp reading when the tempature reaches it's highest and lowest points. Take at least 5 consectutive readings and average them out. You should get an average within 10 degrees of set temp(350 degrees). If it is off by 35 degrees or less you can usually caluibrate the thermostat back to proper temp. This procedure can be different for each range model. If it is more than 35 degrees off or you are getting irratic readings then the thermostat or thermostat components might need to be replaced.

Oven temp

You could have a weak oven ignitor. If it has a "glowbar" style ignitor they get weak after while and will light once or twice nd then wont be drawing enough energy to open the gas valve on subsequent attempts. You can check only with a clamp on amp meter. If under 3 ampa replace the ignitor.

GE oven

Yup...I believe this may have been an issue with some GE models. I seem to remember a problem where some models had problems staying lit after preheating. The fix was replacing the oven thermostat. Now...the normal cycle for an oven lighting is just what you described. The glow igniter will glow first, followed by the gas valve opening, followed by ignition. Once the oven reaches optimum temperature it is normal for the gas to shut off and come back on to maintain oven temperature. However, if this is going on in a frequent fashion with the oven never getting warm, your guess is probably a correct one. Good luck to you.
