Question about HP Laserjet M2727nf Multifunction Printer

Scanner error 5 turn off then on

I have tried turning off and then on but this doesnt help. i keep getting the same error message on teh device display. anyone have any advice on how to resolve this? many thanks, /Eva I have the some problem with scanner error 5. Google give me a answer: Scanner error 5 indicates it is related to scanner assembly... try connecting the printer to wall outlet, n chk.. if issue still persist try resetting the printer to factory defaults... if nt still you can try updating the firmware... if no go thn contact hp for service options... Hmm.. If you have tried all that, and even cleaning sensors, then: The step motor likely needs replacing. (Do you hear the motor moving when you turn the scanner back on after you move the scanner head to the right?) (Need to lift the small glass to push it across a bit.!)
This is replaced as part of the scanner assembly:

There is nothing to try this is a problem with the hardware, both the scanner assembly and the formatter board have to be replaced, contact hp tech support if it has been less than 2 years since the purchase date and they will service the printer under a service note or offer the standard warranty options including replacing the unit for a refurb, that would be my recommendation.

This problem has to do with the scanner mirror. You may hear a grinding sound, also. The reason it does this is because the scanner bulb cannot find 'home', so it keeps trying to find it. Well, it uses the mirrors to reflect on another object inside the scanner to tell it when to stop. The mirror on top of the right next to the scanner bulb may need to be cleaned. This works every time for me, except the same problem always comes back sooner or later.
how to clean-
1.unplug your scanner
2.notice the glass covering on the left side, it can be removed with a Phillips screwdriver. Unscrew the plastic surrounding the glass and then remove the glass covering.
3.Plug the scanner back in and wait for the scanner to move left and then unplug it before it starts moving to the right. Repeat this until scanner bulb is all the way on the left of the machine.
-an alternative method-
with the glass covering removed, use a pair of pliers to move the small belt that moves the scanner bulb. keep moving it until the scanner bulb is all the way on the left of the machine.
4.With the scanner bulb assembly in reach, grab a Q-tip and gently clean the mirror that is just to the right of the bulb. You might want a flashlight to see the dirt and dust.
5. Put the glass covering back on.
6. Plug in the scanner.
At first to me it seemed like it wouldn't work, but it does.

This is the problem with your scanner. If it is under warranty please take it to Hp Service center and they will replace it free for you.

If you scanner error 5 or printer hangs at scanner bulb warming up than the issue is with Scanning Assembly inside the printer and it is hardware issue.

wait 5 minutes
press and hold the power/on button for 60+ seconds
keep holding while plugging back in, and for another 60 seconds after, then release if that doesnt work it is an internal fault which would require repairs or exchange in your case

The only fix that I know is to get the scanner/copier assembly(that's the assembly at the very top where the copier is) replaced.
I don't imagine that it is cheap. Get an estimate 1st.

The scanner suddenly stopped working - the error


try turning it off and on, if this doesnt help un plug cable and restart PC.
then plug cable back and and see if the PC will detect it then try again.
if the PC doesnt detect it then try different cable and if this doesnt help you will need to contact manufacturer.

My M2727nf doesn't coppy or scan. message displays " error 5 Turn off and turn on." After turning off and on, it keeps displaying the same message.


Hi this is def a hardware failure:

Try doing a nvram
Try doing a hard or reset or nvram:
1. Turn the printer off
2. Hold down the right arrow and the cancel button
3. Reboot the printer while holding the buttons and hold until permanent storage is displayed. Let go of the buttons and wait for the ready message on the display.

if this does not work, have it serviced they will need to replace the formatter board as well as the scanner assembly.

If within 2 years from the purchase date contact HP and request for a case number the printer has a service note for a scanner error 5 or 8.

I am getting a message that says Scanner Error 5 turn off then on and when I turn off then on it will print one document and the message comes back up. Please help if you can thanks, KT


Try cleaning the scanner glass real good with alcohol. If that doesn't help, you may have to get a tecchnician to disassemble it to clean the underside of the glass and the scanner.

I have a ricoh aficio 2035 that reads error sc 546 problem


It is fuser code, to reset enter the sevice mode by pressing All clear 1,0,7 & Keeping Stop button pressing, Press the copy Mode, then OFF & ON the m/c, the code will cleared.

Won't scan nor fax


HP multi units are notorious for scanner failures. It is just a weak component in their machines. I have seen this time and time again. The only solution is to change the scanner out or purchase a different machine. Just keep in mind the notoriety HP has which failed scanners. If you want to venture into the replacement of the scanner the following website might have the product you are looking for. Otherwise, search around the net for a scanner assembly unit for the OJ7310. But, be prepared scanner units are not cheap.

Eva, This is a common problem with this machine and more than likely the scanner will need to be replaced. You should try calling HP and see if they will cover it since it is a common problem.

Copy function was not working, says "device is busy". Message appeared on the printer screen is:"scanner error 5, turn off then on". This was done several times and message still appeared. I called 866-625-1176 and was connected with HP Technical Support and after 20 - 25 minutes of diagnostics, the technician informed me that they were sending me a new printer at no charge. I assume this meant that HP is aware of the defect and has no solution other than to replace it. The printer was only 6 months old.
