Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

External Hard Drive has stopped being recognized

I plug my 500gb Samsung ext HD in, the power light comes on as per usual but there's no noise when I plug it in (ie the windows connect sound) and the light is on and it's making the same humming noise it always has indicating it's going. Doesn't show in My Computer, and doesn't come up after I click refresh or after I go to My Computer > Manage. Nothing's there when I go to click Remove, nor is there a sound after I unplug it. It is USB powered and I've never had an issue with it before. thanks

First thing to do is to try it on another computer to see if its not your windows playing with you.

If that doesn't work its either the USB controller inside your Hard drive box or the hard drive itself.

The only way to figure it out from there is to open the Hard drive case remove the Hard drive and either try it with another usb module that you know works or plug it right in the computer with IDE or Sata interface.

I have the same problem, but in another computer disk normally works. I believe, when I reinstall win XP, than it will be OK, but I won't do this step.

(sometimes happens, that it works, but its percentage 1:20 that the win recognize it...)

I tried to totally reinstal windows (format disc than install XP), BUT STILL the win doesn't see the disc..
It can't be in the Samsung.. in other PC's works.
It can't be in the Win XP.. after intalling new windows it still works not
    Please help..

SOURCE: I'm having a problem with my SmartDisk external

Some units have two cords one power one data , in the event
that a unit is not recognized its always the data cord , data cord
hooks itself to a computer via its data cord , so two items are
needed a good working 2.0 high speed USB and a good working USB cable , hook your unit up to your computer , reboot your
computer then try looking in my computer for the drive , if the
HDD is in working order its only way to your computer is the cord
or its USB connector , sometimes USB connectors break for no
apparent reason try checking your USB connections with other
items such as flash drives but not items such as lights fans or
headphones

Your hard drive is probably dead. However there are stillhopes for hard drive datarecovery.
Put the hard drive in a plastic bag to be compatible for the freezer. Freezingsometimes works to revive a dying hard drive, at least for a shorttime(Probable just about 20 minutes), but be sure that the bag is sealedtightly so that condensation and ice crystals don't form. Put it in yourfreezer for 24 hours that will do the trick. While it's still cold, plug itinto your computer. And you may be able to view it in 'my computer'. And youmay act quickly, because you may only have 20 minutes to recover your data offit and after that the hard drive is completely dead.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office where supply datarecovery service but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money andwhether they can recover data is not guaranteed.
Here is a tutorial to guide you how torecover hard drive data.

Hard Drive not recognized by laptop

The Hard Drive could have come loose from the SATA or PATA connection, or your Hard Drive could have simply died. If it is still under warranty; replace it. If it is out of warranty; open the external casing and check that the HD is connected and / or test the HD in a separate external casing or Desktop that you have. If it is connected and the external casing is working properly (or Desktop is booting properly and can read it), then you have a dead Hard Drive and will have to buy a new one.

Hi,
it´s my first time on this topic, but I´d recommend reinstalling it´s drivers, it sounds like it´s stuck there. Or just to be sure it is working ok, the both connections, esata and usb. If any of them work it´s ok. If not, come back, we´ll figure something out for you.

Simpletech hard drive not working

I have that problem similiar to yours. My simple tech stopped working for like two years so i decided to open up my simple tech and removed my HD away from the old enclosure so I can try building my own external hard drive for the first time. I bought another new 3.5 enclosure, IDE/ATA for the old HD. I put it in the new enclosure and it worked!

It's the only solution you can have. No need to retrieve data or re-format your HD. You can leave it the way you like...if you wanna reformat it...up to you.
