Question about Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade SP1 Upgrade Version for PC

1 Answer

It is not detecting the OS/partition on my HD

I installed vista Ultimate 64 upgrade over a 2000 professional SP4 OS. I had everything running smooth, when I was installing Nero, it re-started. when It did, it tried to boot from disk and failed (no disk was there) I inserted vista ultimate upgrade disk, and went to the Repair option, and it is not detecting my OS. So thinking, "Bah I'll just re-install" I go to do so.....and it is only detecting the last little bit of unpartitioned space on my 1 TB HD. It does not seem to be detecting the partition at all. Help!

I am not sure why you are asking for a clarification.....I did not anywhere say XP in my question 1st, I did use the Vista Ultimate upgrade w/sp 1 to upgrade my windows 2000 professional SP4 installation. I am not asking about multi OS installs, I understand I have only one OS. But I saved 130$ getting the upgrade pack instead of the full version.

The model is seagate barracuda 7200.12 st31000528as 1tb
To be clear to all here, I have a single hardrive with 1 partition. It is not detecting it.

    Windows xp "over" windows Vista?

in that case, you will only have one OS.

partition has nothing to do with OS installation unless you are try to do a mult-boot system. in that case you need to have a mult boot header, not just HD partition.

ifyou just partition the hard drive and install different os in each partion. then the last os will be only one that will work. snce there are not multi-boot hearder to tell the machine to boot into selected os.

    Download the ZIP file:

    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities/ptedit.zip

Right-mouse click on the ZIP file, and choose "expand".

Copy 'ptedit.exe' to a bootable MS DOS diskette.

Boot the problematic computer from the MS DOS diskette.

Run PTEDIT, and tell us the output for each partition on the hard-drive.

Hello,

Take a look here: http://blog.atola.com/restoring-factory-hard-drive-capacity/

If that does not help please write your hdd model (Usually on a sticker on top of HDD)
What size is the partition the installation detects?

You'll need an installation disk, but why would you want to invest the time and effort with Vista. Upgrade to Win7 instead (stay away from 8).

No driver for Canoscan FB 630U Vista 64 bit

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Canon supports this scanner under Vista. Check if the Windows generic TWAIN scanner driver will work. The Canon software won't work. If the generic driver can be installed, then you should be able to acquire scans in Paint (File > Import from Scanner or Camera), Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan) (some versions of Vista) or Windows Photo Gallery (IIRC it works like Paint).

I hope this helps.

(Canon wants you to upgrade. I have a different scanner that isn't officially supported past XP and the generic driver works fine. Unfortunately, you can't just use the XP driver in the compatibility mode due to the lack of signed drivers that are required in the 64-bit OS)

Can i convert a 32 bit to a 64 bit

You can use the Upgrade option during Windows 7 installation, which preserves your files, settings, and programs, only if you're currently running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista and you want to upgrade to the 32-bit version of Windows 7. Similarly, if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you can only perform an upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows 7. For more information, go to Upgrading to Windows 7: frequently asked questions on the Windows website.
If you want to move from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or vice versa, you'll need to back up your files and choose the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. Then, you'll need to restore your files and reinstall your programs. For more information about performing a custom installation, see Installing and reinstalling Windows 7‍.

  • To install a 64-bit version of Windows 7 on a computer running a 32-bit version of Windows, you'll need to start, or boot, your computer using a 64-bit Windows 7 installation disc or files.
  • If you start your computer using a 64-bit Windows 7 installation disc or files, but your computer isn't capable of running a 64-bit version of Windows, you'll see a Windows Boot Manager error. You'll need to use a 32-bit Windows 7 installation disc or files instead.
  • Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from a 64-bit version of Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista but you plan to install a 32-bit version of Windows 7, you can move your files to an external location manually or use Backup and Restore in Windows Vista. For more information, go to Back up your files and

Nero installation problem

If you have a version below 7, then Nero will not work with Vista. It was a well known issue with Vista and a reason why some people I know wouldn't upgrade to it.
