Please try these steps: 1. Connect the player to the computer. 2. From the computer, select start - Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - System. "System Properties" is displayed. 3. Select Hardware tab, and open Device manager. 4. Open Universal Serial Bus controllers, and select USB Mass Storage Device or WALKMAN NWZ-XXXXX. 5. Select Action - Update Driver ... from the menu bar. "Welcome to the Hardware Update Wizard" is displayed. 6. A dialog on Windows Update connection will be displayed. Select No, not this time., followed by Next. 7. Select Install from a list or specific location [Advanced], followed by Next for the hardware install method. 8. Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install., followed by Next for the search and install option. 9. Check Show compatible hardware, and then select MTP Device* in the model list, followed by Next. The device driver is installed. 10. "Completing the Hardware Update Wizard" message is displayed, and confirm "MTP Device" message. Click Finish. Thanks. gylacz
Before connecting the Player to the Computer, Format the Player using the Format utility in the Walkman and then install the Windows Media Player version 11 Software in the Computer. The Format option in the Player is at the INITIALIZE option in the SETTINGS Menu of the Player.
You can also transfer the music to the Player without using the Windows Media Player 11 Software. You can drag and drop the music files to the Removable Drive which appear at the My Computer or Computer window depending upon the Operating System installed. This walkman Player is not compatible with the Windows 7 OS.
Try to press the power button while it is connected to your computer. See if it will show up charging. If it is not, then you may need to contact Sony Support.
that used to happen with my old SNW.... the way i fixed it was updating the firmware. you need your computer connect cable, the sony website, some hard drive space, and a little bit of patience. i recomend making a backup of everything on the usb device before starting this prossess, just as a precaution.
step 1 (optional)
backup your stuff
step 2

try reseting the device its usualy a small pinhole on the back or side of the device try holding that in for about 10 seconds
try reflashing the firmware for your device you can find the latest firmware and flashing utilitys from the manufacturers website
also try and go download the drivers for it so that you can try and detect the player. If that does not work try plugging it into someone elses computer and see if it works. That way yo can figure out if it is your computer or the player. Sorry I could not be of more help.
