Floor jack won't stay

I have a Craftsman 3 ton floor jack, it will lift fine, but after a short while it will let it self back down. What could it be, if it is the seals is it a easy fix, my buddy to me to throw it away and get a new one if its the seals.

Does it come down very slowly, or fast?
If you are prepared to throw it away, pulls it down first and see if you can replace the seals. You may be able to buy them, or even make them.
If you then find you cant fix it, only then throw it out. Good luck!

If you are having a problem with the jack slipping...if its Craftsman , they may take it back and provide a replacement. Even if you could fix it, it never works that same. It is not worth your life. I know, I lost my husband when a jack slipped 3 years ago this month.

How to overhaul/ repair a hydraulic floor jack?

Sounds like a bad seal on that plunger that pumps up and down. That plunger should unscrew and then it's pilled out , there should be an O ring. That is where it probably is leaking. You probably need to top off oil. You can jack oil in an auto store or Lowes, etc.

What is a jack lift?

"A jack lift is a mechanical device used as a lifting device to lift heavy loads or apply great forces. Jacks employ a screw thread or hydraulic cylinder to apply very high linear forces.
A mechanical jack is a device which lifts heavy equipment. The most common form is a car jack, floor jack or garage jack which lifts vehicles so that maintenance can be performed.
More powerful jacks use hydraulic power to provide more lift over greater distances. Mechanical jacks are usually rated for a maximum lifting capacity (for example, 1.5 tons or 3 tons)." (Wikipedia)

Craftsman 3 ton floor jack will not stay up

you need to bleed the air from the cylinder. there should be an air bleed or else you bleed it at the relief needle. also, if it still leaks down after you bleeed out the air, the seat for the relief valve or the seals at the relief valve cartridge are worn
