Question about Sony DCR-HC26 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

1 Answer

Won't stay powered on; misaligned heads

I own a Sony DCR-HC26 camcorder. Purchased in 7/06. On Memorial Day I was reviewing tapes and the thing shut down suddenly. With A/C plug still same problem. It turns on for a second or two, then shuts off. I immediately brought it into Geek Squad at Best Buy b/c it is under warranty. They ship it out to a third party service center. The unit should arrive Monday if it hasn't already, so I may find out answers soon. In the meantime I've tried to do some detective work and get some lead ons. What threw everything out of loop was that I then discovered the camcorder had misaligned heads, as the tapes which were recorded on my camcorder and play fine during playback do not play correctly on other camcorders (and I tried several!). Blips of sound, and distorted visual. Thus it appears I can only review and import a year's worth of videos if the camera gets back to me with the heads still misaligned! (So I told them, DO NOT ADJUST the tape heads!). However, through all this talking with Sony and a media business and Best Buy and net searches I'm no closer to knowing a possible reason for the power issue. And whether that can likely be isolated from the tape heads issue so they can get the camcorder started again without moving the heads. I pray it's something as easy as a reset but if not, as long as it does not involve adjusting the tape heads. The video is very precious to me and cannot be re-filmed in any sense.

Had simmilar issue with a hi8 cam. tapes will never be able to play right because the heads were mi-aligned from factory. if it comes back and the tape does same thing that the cameras you borrowed, you have to misalign the heads till the image and audio come back.

There is no erase or delete, per-say...you have to re-record over any recordings on the tape in a silent room with the lens cap on.

DCR-HC26 will record but will not play

There are two solutions, one, buy a mini dv tape player. They are kind of expensive, but you will be able to get your information off your tapes. Second, buy a used, working mini dv camcorder on ebay and use it to get your information off your tapes. A five year old camcorder is not work fixing.

How to transfer sony dcr-hc26 videos to pc using usb cable thanks

The Sony HDR-HC26 is a miniDV tape based camcorder. No surprises if you can't get USB streaming working.

ALL miniDV tape based camcorders transfer DV-format video by conneting the DV port of the HD camcorder to the Firewire port of your computer. USB won't work. The "DV" in miniDV = Digital Video. It is as digital as the digital video from flash memory or hard disc drive or DVD based camcorders - only better because it is not compressed as much as the others.

Memory cards are not the only way to store digital video - and while not as good as miniDV tape, memory cards are not as bad as DVD based consumer camcorders...

Firewire IEEE1394, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing.

If your computer does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot (PCI for desktops; PCMCIA or ExpressCard for laptops), so you can add one.

Sony dcr-trv25 when playing back tapes sound goes on and off pic sometimes distorted tried cleanig with tape still doing same thing I dropped camera from a standing position (3ft) nothing broke thats when...

Yes sounds as though the audio playback head had become misaligned by the drop... You will have to get it back in position again. Thats a job and a half though, really only something that can be done by a tech?

My sony handycam dcr-hc26 door won't close. error C:32:11

Hi,
Remove battery/ power source from camcorder for minute, reattach battery/ power source and close the tape door.
If that does not solve problem then I'm afraid, tape mechanism got defective and will be replaced.
Let me know if you need tape mechanism part number info.
Thanks.
