SOURCE: Alpine Air Living Air XL15 not producing Ozone or Deodorizing. New plates

Confirm that the appropriate sections of the circuitry are powered up and drawing power; check the interlock switch action; toss it back to the maker because the Hi-V transformer or ladder circuit or sense or hold caps were (if testing proves) never quite functional.

SOURCE: I have an Alpine Living Air XL15 which doesn't

The plates should not glow, but on High, you should hear a buzzing sound. But, you should also smell the ozone. I've only worked on two, but the reason they both didn't work was that the connectors on the wires leading to the plates were corroded beyond use. The top connector was the worst. Cutting them off and installing new ones solved the problem. Also, when you clean it, always clean the contacts where they touch the plates with alcohol. Look at the plates to see if they have more than one spot of glue around the center of the plate. (both sides) If so, they will be less noisy than older ones. Hint - Replace the plates when the glue on them turns dark brown.

SOURCE: Have a Living Air XL15 > everything works motor, fan, BUT .....

look through the front grill while its "on" you should see a glow from a neon lamp inside. If its not on chances are the circuit card is dead (should have about 350VDC plate voltage).
I have a used but good board if anyone needs one.

Got no power on my alpine xl15, someone told me the rectifier seems to fried and to change it, does anyone know where I might order this part? Thank You, Nemo Kim

Please check the fuse first. Unscrew or unlatch the small knob at the back of the machine and inspect the fuse. Even if it looks OK, you probably should replace it. Be sure to get one that is the EXACT same size, available at an auto parts store. If the fuse was the problem, the new fuse should allow your machine to power up and work well.

Make sure the plates are inserted firmly and correctly into the grooves at the top and bottom, so the fingers press firmly on the screen portion.

If the fan now works, but you aren't detecting any purifier (or hearing the buzz caused by the electricity cycling through the plates) you'll need a new transformer. This sends the power through the contact fingers to the plates. Vollara (formerly Alpine/EcoQuest) no longer makes the XL15. The newer machine is called the Classic. Call customer service and they'll tell you what your options are. 800-989-2299. Use #16618 if you need a referral number.

New noise

Hi wendie286,

An electrical hum (for the plasma discharge plates) is normal. If you wind-up the "Purifier" control knob to "max", it will increase, and you'll probably be able to see a faint purple glow coming from th plates. This is normal, and is how the O3/activated oxygen is being produced.

A mechanical hum sounds more like the fan motor. These are the only moving parts and do eventually wear-out. If it's still turning, it shouldn't be a problem - - if it starts turning slower and slower, it's time to plan a replacement motor. I have a couple, but I think FixYa's terms forbid me selling it to you directly. Recommended solutions in this case:
1) If you still know an active dealer, you might see if they have any
2) You could probably find them on the web, though the last time I did this (in December), I couldn't seem to find them; I didn't have a lot of time to spend then.
3) Find another XL15 (maybe on eBay) and cannibalize a fan from the older machine (note: different versions of the XL15 had different motor mounting configurations, so me sure you know what you're getting - maybe ask for a digital picture of the prospective purchase showing how it's mounted).

If you write back with more details, I may be able to offer more precise guidance.

If I can be of further assistance, or if you have questions, let me know before rating me.

If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly. My goal is to earn a "FixYa" rating from everyone I help.

Thanks for using Fixya.com,

Jon

ALPINE XL15

Hi jackkikay,

A faint buzzing sound is normal - - that's the high-voltage plasma discharge simulating lightning in a thunderstorm. If the room is dark you should be able to see a faint bluish-purple glow of the metal grid on the plate(s) inside. This should somewhat louder as you increase the setting.

It should not really be so loud that is stands out in the background of normal noises (refrigerator running for example). If the buzz is loud - - like something is shorting-out internally (loud crackling sound), that would signal a different problem - - I'd need more details about what you're observing. Approximate purchase day, specific model, number of plates, general condition of the interior would all be helpful if you deem the buzz to be too loud for normal operation.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance for using Fixya.com,

Jon

If that's one of those fanless air purifiers with parallel plates, it is not all right. The plates need to come up to charge and not discharge much at all unless there is a big contaminant particle (e.g. flying insects.) You may or may not be able to make the plates parallel again; there should be no sharp bits. If it's an ionizer, even then the flashing should be rare; otherwise you will get more ozone than you need. That can be fun, but it is not making plain old clean air....

Xl15 sparking

Clean the contacts that touch the plates with Qtips and 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol and replace the plates. Sparking on the plates usually is a sign of a crack in the plate. The electricity is passing through the plate, creating an arc. The crack may be invisible to the naked eye.
