Remove the rear motor cover and lock the shaft to spin the impeller off. Be sure to note what voltage your old motor was set for and duplicate that setting on the new motor.

My hayward 1 hp pool pump is smoking. Now can I fix it?

ya sure can, it will need a new or rebuilt motor, i want you to search for your local pool pump motor repair guy and have him replace, repair the motor click here to see HOW TO TAKE YOUR PUMP APART. its best off to let a expert do the swap, you can install the motor portion back into the plumbing part of the pump and save BIG $$$. remember to ask your rebuilder what you can do to prevent and extend the life of your motor

If my hayward pool vac (AquaBug) is always connected when the pump is on (4 hrs/day), do I need (will I benefit) from a variable speed or 2-speed motor? Or, will I do fine just by downsizing from 1.5 HP to...

Probably go for the 2 speed, manufacturers often embellish on the hp ratings of pumps, you will definitely see more energy savings from a 2 speed. Just stay away from hayward, easy to work on for service tech's for break alot. Go with Pentair or Jandy they are worth the money.

Is there an advantage to a 2 speed over a regular 1.5 Hayward motor?

It cost's more and thats it unless you have the switching to run it. If so you can use low speed to clean and heat to save money on your elect. bill.

I have a 1 hp hayward sp above ground pool that needs bearings

This is not a projcet for the light of heart. By the time you buy the tools nessary you could have this done by a motor shop for about the same money or quite often for less. You can get a book on how this is done at your local library if you want to do this yourself. It will still give you general instructions as their are a lot of different brands and styles of motors.

Changing motor hayward 1.5 HP

Super pumps are very easy. If it is a northstar it is more difficult. Super pump. You will need 1 motor, 1 pump seal, 1 diffuser gasket, 1 housing gasket. turn off breaker, disconnect wires -noting whether it is 110 or 220 volts- , unscrew four bolts on back of pump housing (shaft side of motor), pull out motor with rear housing and diffuser (sometimes diffuser sticks inside), on wire side of motor hold shaft with wrench (flathead in some cases, but it is harder), unscrew impeller counter clockwise (like normal screw - you will nee a big pair of channel locks or a strap wrench), there are two pieces of the back housing and once the impailer is off you can remove the half that is closest to the end of the shaft to reveal four more screws, unscrew those four screws. screw back part of rear housing onto new motor. Install new pump seal to front part of rear housing and impeller, slide on front part of rear housing and then screw on impeller while holding shaft on wire side with wrench (only hand tight), replace housing gasket, replace diffuser gasket, slide into front housing and screw in four bolts. If electrical was 110 you will need to move the jumper on the wire end..if it was 220 then just hook kup wires...doesnt matter which is which as long as green or bare goes to the ground screw.
