Gardian Generator transfers while doing whisper test

I have a 18KV standby generator and now the generator transfers to the generator when it is doing the whisper test, this is very bad, because it runs on half speed, so it acts like a brownout and it damaged four batteries in two UPS'es. Do you know how to handle that.

How does it do for RPM's with light load? Try turning off some load so when it transfers, you can see if you're overloading it. To much load could bring down the speed drastically. If it holds speed with 3/4 load, that's probably the problem. If not, try half load. You need to match the load watts to the Gen KW.

I had a technician out and he found that the circuit board was bad and it was caused by a short to ground on the sensing line.

Check the battery condition, and charger. Check also the fuses in the transfer switch (note they are line voltage so maybe call an electrician)

The generator doesn't turn off after transfering power back to the utility

The transfer switch is responsible for starting / stopping the generator. Check your auto - start circuit. It is 2 wires that go between the genset and ATS. They are generally normally open. When the genset is to shut down this circuit needs to change state.

Stops and starts

Hi there,
Most home standby generators are setup to run once a week so as to keep the engine lubed up and the generator windings dry. So if yours is comming on once a week at about the same time and running for something like 15 minutes, that's what is going on.
On the other hand, if your generator is starting and the switch is transferring somewhat randomly, you could have a problem with the neutral connection in your system, the power could really be going out and coming back on, and/or the control board in your generator could be broken.

Regards,
Carl
