Have you tried changing the contrast balance at all? If not, there should be keys on your laptop to do so, though you may have to hit the Fn key to get them to work. Should be shaped like little suns with an up/down arrow beside them to brighten/darken the colour levels.

If you don't have those for some reason, you can right click on your desktop and click properties to bring up your display properties. There should be a settings tab, and under that an Advanced button. Another window should pop up, and there should be another tab up there for Colour. Click that, and you should be able to adjust the contrast and brightness from there.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

My Laptop Backlight switches off, after windows start-up..I need to get this fix or advice will do..

If you can barely see the icons when you use a flash light to shine on the screen, then you lcd inverter is bad. Replace the lcd inverter and your screen will be ok.

Display is very dark and can barely be viewed. Brightness controls don't do anything. Any suggestions? It is a Dell latitude 505.

Sounds like the back light has gone.
You may be lucky and you just have a loose connection, its worth taking the front off the screen surround and re-seating all conectors.
If it is the backlight, you can get a replacement quite cheap (£10)

I have a Dell D600. It starts up to boot page and after 3-5 seconds the picture disappears but the laptop is still running. The indicator light near the power button with a 9 on it stays lit.

I have a similar problem currently. Boot and try pressing Fn+Up arrow repeatedly to raise brightness. Then flick the little button right above your volume control that tells the laptop youve closed it. If you see the screen flicker on/off then its the button. Otherwise reboot and try shining a light at the screen from different angles and see if you can see dark images. If you can see windows boot up but dark, then it is almost certainly your LCDs backlight. If you can't see dark images, next try using the VGA output plug at the back of your laptop to connect to a different monitor. Within less than 1 minute you should see the image on the external screen. If not, try pressing Fn+F8 a few times to toggle the output. If still no picture on the external screen your video card might be fried. If you do get a picture on the external with or without seeing dark images on the laptop, then it is a problem with either the LCD screen, it's inverter, or the screens flex cable. Check Dell support for your systems original parts list HERE. You will need your laptops Service Tag number, which is on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop.

Hope this helps, Good luck.

Loss of light on screen Dell Inspiron E1705

Looks like the backlighting on the display has failed, sometimes it is just a lose cable, buy most often the LCD needs to be replaced.

to check the cable see the manual at http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/ for how to get to the LCD cables (usually just under the cover that the power button is on)
