Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Device Not Recognized, Code 10 Error

When I plug my Western Digital into the USB on my laptop, or any other computer, it will not start. The power light is on, it clicks when plugged in, but the drive does not appear for me to view my files. I've tried restarting, taking out the battery, switching enclosures in case it was a power supply issue, but I'm unsure of what to try now. x_x I can't afford to lose the files on it, at all

I've tried replacing the data cable, I went as far as using an entirely different enclosure with a different type of USB plug-in and it did that same thing.

Both of your reviews were helpful, and after fighting with this thing for weeks I finally managed to get it to work. Thank you for the help <3

If anyone else has this problem, I fixed mine after switching to a different enclosure, and using a different power adapter than even that enclosure had and plugging it into the wall directly, not a power strip. Even after switching enclosures with different power plugins to begin with, it still ended up being a power supply issue x_x

I have a WD 500 gig My Book. It stopped working, after I had uploaded 10 gigs of pics to it. My desktop wouldn't recognize that it was even there. Monkeyed around with it, then gave up with the intention of using the warranty. Three weeks later I was going through the research to use the warranty, and WD wanted me to run online diagnostics on it first. So, reconnected it, and to my surprise, it's been working fine ever since (4 months now).

Device is not recognized

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Yes I had the same problem with a hdd. Try to use Nokia charger to power it up separately or look for a usb cable with 2 plugs. At one end with one plug(the one that goes in the hard drive) and 2 plugs to connect them in the computer. It should work perfectly

MyBook WD external HDD Code 10 error

If you have tried the device in 5 different computers and it has the same problem the the problem is with the device. You might want to try and dis-assemble the hard drive case and try installing it directly into the computer to make sure the drive is working properly and to recover you files. If the drive is working then the problem is with the device interface that is built into the case or the built-in power supply.

90% of the time this is a power problem. The USB port on the computer can not supply enough watts. Use an external USB hub that has a 5V power supply.

The device became

Find another computer and plug it in. This will let you know if the problem is with the My Book or with your computer.

If it turns out to be your computer, try removing the software that the My Book installed, reboot your computer and go through the installation again.

You always have the option to call Western Digital for more help. I have called them on the My Book World and they were very helpful.

I hope this helps.
