Yes and no, the heater will not get damage can handle hot water, buttttt... the pipes and the filter made of cheaper plastics may get damage slowly

No, though you sort of waste the gas running the heater all the way to the point you shut down the pump.

if you dont have enough flow, the heater wont run. if you have a VS pump and run it at minimum speed to let heater work, the heater wont cool properly and may damage components.

Your heater should shut down rite away and the pump will keep running to pump cool water through the heater. After the cool down period then the valves will go back to normal run positions.

Should the pentair minimax pool heater be wired to line or load?

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

Line side for a couple of reasons: First, there are more safety switches than just the pressure switch to ensure the unit shuts off prior to damaging itself. Second, and probably more importantly, removing power from the unit each time the time clock turns it off will keep erasing the temperature settings you enter. After a while that gets old for most people. Coincidentally, when pressure switched fail, they fail as open making the heater inoperable. While they could conceivably short closed and cause the situation you fear, I have never seen that in 20 years of servicing heaters.

Whisperflo Pump 1.5 Hp problem

The pump is probably fine the motor is the problem. If it just hums it might just be the capacitor on top of the motor. Don't know how long it sat there not able to start. Was the motor extremely hot ? If it got too hot may have damaged the motor. Motor is replaceable without replacing the pump head.
