Honda IZY engine hunts. I mean the speed pulses rhythmically!

The engine starts easily, but the governor pulses the revs continuously whether it is hot or cold. I am using fresh petrol; I have changed the spark plug. All the linkages are clean and move freely. I have taken the carb off and looked inside. It is very clean, with no deposits. The main jet is clear, and I have **** the bypass jets, though I can't see how to check them otherwise. If I hold the governor lever still, the speed is fairly constant, though it does sound a bit rough. Any ideas would be welcome please! I have a 22hp briggs intek twin and it pulses and misses at full throttle

Just adjust the idle speed control/Fuel air screw located pointing downward on the bowl of the carb,Just start the engine, idle up high and turn the screw until it levels out and runs smooth.

If you have removed the main jet and made sure it is clean(unscrew it from inside central tube), remove the throttle stop screw (brass screw on top of carb) revealed is a brass screw top, unscrew and make sure that the pilot jet inside is clean, blow through it with foot pump fitted with a rubber seal (tyre valve), if you have cleaned it all thoroughly it will run after refitting all, make a physical note just where the throttle stop screw is (how many threads are visable) before removing so you have some idea where it should be screwed back into. Its starving of fuel due to dirt. Always but always turn off fuel at the end of mowing and run carb dry otherwise fuel evaporates leaving fuel debris that then binds together to block your jets

Me and a friend both had this problem with our mower, they would only run on high speed and would pulse or surge at idle. Tried cleaning the carb but that didn't work, tried replacing all the gaskets, no improvement. Bought a new carb from a Honda power equipment dealer online for a whopping $16, along with the governor spring and rod, spent about $31 total. Installed the new carb and it purrs like a kitten, idles, runs on any speed, just like new. I did also move the spring on the lower right that attaches to the governor lever from one hole to another. Seems the carb and associated linkage is very touchy, that's why I replaced the other parts but the carb may have had a clogged jet and I just didn't feel like messing with it so replacing it did the trick for me.

should be an internal govenor on a plant unit like that

...
there is a thicker than normal metal rod running off the carby to the motor and that is where you adjust the govenor

cant find good instruction how that governor is adjusted ..if adjusted the wrong way it will rev out may even throw a piston

then check carby idle adjustment
should hunt (rev up and down only slightly )as load changes

Why does my generator pulsate while running, what's wrong with it?

This action is called governor hunting which generally means the carburetor needs resetting ,a complete internal cleaning or a rebuild
then adjust the high speed and low speed settings by the adjusting screws on the governor spring system (manual may be required for these settings)

Idle problem

There is an arm that runs from the governor arm to the carb. There should be a long spring on this to even out the revs. If that has come off it can cause similar problems. If you have checked/reset the governor arm on the pinion that comes out of the crank housing and the spring is in place I would think the only other problem is the actuator that operates the governor arm pinion internally. It is a strip down job to check it, but there is a (plastic?) cog that runs of a gear on the side of the crank shaft. This has a weighted pusher that moves with engine speed to move the governor arm. I have seen a couple of engines where there is wear and the weights have popped over the 'top hat' pusher stopping it moving freely and causing full revs. If you're not confident in stripping the crank casing down (you can leave the piston and crank in place to check the governor mechanism) then you should definately take it to a dealer or experienced technician.http://www.honda-engines-eu.com/engines/PartSelection.jsp?model=GX390K1&type=BJ&npl=10ZF601%20&lang=EN
Position 9 is the governor assembly.

My Honda 13.5hp engine has started surging. It seemed to occur after the air filter fell off during mowing for a few seconds. I have tried cleaning the carburator but it still surges. Anything else I can...

Hi sndlys,
When the engine surges (we call it hunting) like that it usually means, the carburetor or the governor need adjustment. You have cleaned the carb. but did you clean or replace the air filter, and did you try to adjust the carb? Since it was running good before I doubt it is the governor. Try to adjust the high speed mixture screw by 1/8 turn at a time and waiting a few seconds to let that adjustment work it's way in the carb. Start by turning the screw out (counterclockwise) a few times. If nothing happens or gets worse turn the screw in (clockwise) a few times, but do not go less than 1 turn out from a lightly seated position. (turned clockwise until lightly seated so no damage is done to the seat or the needle screw) to prevent running in too lean a mixture to prevent overheating and possible engine damage. You could try the low (idle) speed mixture screw adjust a bit, but make sure you remember the position you started from whenever you any adjustment at all. I think if the carburetor is clean and the air filter is clean, also that there is a good fuel flow to the carb. you should be OK. I hope this helps out a bit.Get back to me if you need help. All the best and good luck. Denis.

Hello i have a Honda izy self propelled it is 3

sounds like your petrol filler cap hole is blocked , try and drill a hole in the cap or loosen the cap slightly , and change the spark plug , the izy can go through plugs regularly, you could try a good wire brushing and set the gap

good luck

04 PT cruiser will not rev above 2500rpm

Yes there is a governor which limits the rpm to 2500 rpm. It ha been limited because beyond this rev, the engine gets overheated and if kept running it that condition would slowly but surely damage the engine badly. Once you have reached the limit naturally your cruise control will stop working since its supposed to maintain that speed, which is not allowed by the governor. This governor can be removed but then you will have to risk damaging your engine fatally........................sodeep

Honda snowblower engine hunting

Sounds like you are hitting the governor. Watch the arms at the carb when you move it to full throttle. The arm should hit a screw. Turn this screw clockwise, until the reving stops.
