How to focus my Zeiss 10x40B TP binoculars

Hi. I just purchased a mint Zeiss 10x40B TP set of binoculars but I am having difficulty focusing them. Can you please tell me the proper sequence of steps to focus them correctly? I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you, David.

Your binoculars are known as the Zeiss Classic or what was once known as the Dialyt. They focus differently from the usual binoculars like those mentioned. The rear wheel is to focus both binocular barrels while using them. The front focus wheel is adjust the right eyepiece to suit your right eye. Binocular manufacturers take into account each eye is slightly different. To focus the Dialyt...First close your right eye and turn the rear wheel until the image is sharp in the left barrel. Leave the focus wheel alone. Now close left eye and adjust the front wheel until the image is sharp for your right eye. The image should now be clear and in focus for both eyes. It should not be needed to use the front wheel from now on. The rear wheel is what you will use to change the focus from near to far objects.

Turn the focus wheel so that the binoculars are as short as they can be.

Look at the eyepieces, one of them will have a scale marked on the side and you are able to turn the eyepiece from side to side.

Start with the eyepiece mark in the central position.

Find an object which is in reasonable focus without moving the main focus wheel

When you have found that close the eye which is looking through the adjustable eyepiece then use the focus wheel to bring the focus in sharp to suit the open eye.

Open both eyes and then use the adjustable eyepiece to bring the other eye into sharp focus

That way you have found the right focus for both eyes.

If the binoculars have two adjustable eyepieces then make sure that both of the adjustments are at the centre position before you start

Hi, I have fungus inside the ocular of my Zeiss Jenoptem 10x50 binoculars. How should I open the binoculars in order to clean the fungus? Thank you!

It is possible for someone to disassemble binoculars to clean etc. But if you are not experienced, there is a high chance it will be out of focus once you assemble it. The vision might even become blurry.
So I advise you to get it serviced by a professional.

Zeiss classic 10x40B focus wheel is stuck. What type of lubricant should I use.

I would suggest a small amount of WD40, applied with a cotton bud.
Hope this helps,

Dear Sir,I would like to ask you to help me with determination of old Carl Zeiss Jena binocular 15x50. If you send me e-mail adress I can send you photos. I can not find similiar piece 15x50 in the Zeiss...

Carl Zeiss Jena is East German manufacture, that is why you don't find it in the Zeiss catalogue (it isn't Zeiss). It is also almost certainly post-war, as there was no East Germany before WW2.

Carl Zeiss Jena made inexpensive optical equipment for export to the West. The optical quality was fairly high, but not as good as the West German Zeiss, and the finish was less good.

The focus adjustment is extremely diffcult to turn/rotate, this began happening over the last year. Othern than that, they are working perfectly. Can I corect this or do they need factory service?

A service agent for Zeiss is your best bet, if not Zeiss themselves. There are service centres for binoculars in most countries around the world. This is not an easy fix problem, send it to someone who knows how!!

Seems like its difficult to get a good focus at longer ranges now and glass is not as clear

Could be you are near sighted, or they need to go to Zeiss. Send them to Zeiss.

What used to be Oshman's is now part of Sports Authority, it may be worth an attempt to contact them to see if they have anything in their archives.

I am not sure about the Quick Focus, but the ones I have were made by Zeiss for Oshman's, thus by matching the Zeiss equivilant parts can be found for mine.

In the UK your best bet would be to send them to Kay Optical. They have an enviable reputation in repairing binoculars. Another place in the UK is Cley Spy in Norfolk who also have much experience with older optics.

Sorry neither is too close to you.

Binoculars Stiff to focus

if they continue to get stiff then eventually the 3 set screws that hold the focus wheel loosen, and you will have no focus capability, its rare with zeiss but sounds like they should be regreased. the problem is to regrease you have to take completely apart as it is internal focus.if i can help any further contact me@ larry@reichinstruments.com
