Question about Audio Players & Recorders

3 Answers

I have many Bose music centers for the lifesyle 12 system. They are also used for the lifestyle 5 system. There are three versions of this unit. The first one 1994 ish then the version one and version two. There are three problems I am finding. One is the display not working. I found the answer to this on fix ya. I will replace the c 17 capaitor and possibly c 16. So I have an answer to this problem. The second of the other problems I am having is the power cord plug. I have to push up or down on the power cord plug to get power to work to the unit. Is this a replaceable part? The unit takes dc power from a power inverter and accepts the round plug from the p51 or p71 power converter. The third problem I am having is some function control buttons on some music centers don't work. Is there a way to clean the buttons or do I need to replace the buttons? If I need to replace the buttons, where do I find an acceptable replacement? Chad

Thanks for the advice. I didn't get an email so I didn't know you had given advice. I just researched on google how to replace a cap. This task doesn't sound too bad. As for the second problem. I have a Mouser catalog. I am looking for the d/c power connector that is correct. I should also write, I called Bose. They don't sell internal parts. What I wish to know, and the reason I paid 9.99 for your advice is specifically which d/c power connector. I am looking on page 1107 or the 2009 catalog of Mouser. Which d/c power connector is the correct one for the Bose music center 5/12? I also contacted an electronic source on eBay, they would need to know the dimensions and the qualifications. The Bose d/c power connector is 12VAC 1.0 amp.
    Please give specifics.

As for the third problem, all the above applies. I am looking for the replacement part for the push button controls on the Bose 5/12 music center. I am looking on page 1566 of the Mouser catalog 2009. It looks similar to an e-switch 320 series momentary pushbutton switch. Is this the correct replacement? Again, I called Bose. They don't sell internal parts for their units. Please give specifics.

Thank you for your time. I hope you can post your answer on FixYa to help out other Bose lovers to repair their music centers. The answer to question one about the display was how I found FixYa in the first place. Your answers are great advertising.

As for the first problem the display, I am replacing the capacitors on C 16, C17, or C19. Recommendation on Fix Ya was specific for each one but didn't designate if it was an electrolytic which is polarized or non-electrolytic which is not polarized. Which caps should I use for the Bose Music Center 5/12?

I wish I could write your answer was helpful. Specifically where do I find the buttons? Which are the correct buttons?

Specifically, Which d/c power connector? Where do I find these power connectors?

Do I need electrolytic capacitors for the display or non electrolytic capacitors? one is polarized and one is not.

As the parts which you require .the bose company does not provides this part.only two options for this parts are
1)
www.radioshack.com
and 2)
a local electronics repair center store.
as they have the same part which you require .they can get this part from old unit which they buy it from junkyard for reparing purpose.other wise this parts are near to not provided and not easily getable.many users facing this same problem are still waiting but some got it from radioshack or from repair store.
mostly they provide it in sometime after you place an order.
thanks.

Hi there,

In regard to your second problem, the power plug can be repair or replaceble. you can obtain the power adpater on the Bose service center on your area. on your 3rd problem the keys can still get back into functions, two ways to fix it either to cleans the pad or the contact on each button. or replace the button if the contact itself has a damged.

let me know for further clarifications

are you willing to send out the unit for repair, as you said bose did not sell their replacement parts, but they can provide it under their repair service. the switch should be compatible bose, and they are the only one nearest to help for the problem.

    let me know

Can't power up my BOSE 1995 Lifestyle Model 5 Music Center

you might want to google the service manual for the system as i did. this will show you how to take it apart. after doing so check the solder points along the dc power jack( power adapter plug on the unit). i was having the same issue and carefully inspected all the components... i resoldered the dc power jack and viola! powers up. btw, my system is bose acoustimass 5 music center model 5 (1995). good luck!

Bose products are highly proprietary. If they have non-standard connectors from the amp or in the speakers I'd take that as a clue they're NOT compatible with other manufacturers' products.

What speakers can I use with a Bose Lifesyle 28 AV 18? I'm being told that there isn't anything other than the original factory speakers? This can't be right?

Bose work best with Bose speakers. It doesn't mean that you can't use other speakers, Just match the impedance (2 or 4 or 8 Ohm)

Yes. But you need your Model 5 music center connected. Just like any receiver. -Without the main LS head unit, this will not be able to turn on.

Lifestyle 12, NO AUDIO and a DEAD DISPLAY

You are correct. The display unit is separate from the audio issue. I have tired to work on a few of these units over the years.

Bose is so proprietary in thier electronics and repair that the average electronics technician cannot service them.

Your only luck it to send the units in for service. If you are dead set on wanting the bose units then, $250 may be worth the repair charges to you.

If I was you, I would retire the Bose equipment and go to my local electronics store to purchase a different brand unit.

Lifestyle 12 receiver vs lifestyle 12 II

yes will work just fine, a slight difference in the output gain from the control baord, but in almost all other cases you wont know the difference. just make sure especially if you intend to use the old cd unit with the new bassbox that if you connect the digital source to to (say dvd player) that you initially use bose remote to turn on bass baox and set volume.

Lifestyle 12 by Bose

No sound ? Make sure the audio input cable is connected to the music center FIXED outputs, the black connector is fully seated in the music center SYSTEM CONTROL 1 jack, and the multi-pin connector is firmly seated in the Acoustimass module jack. ? Turn the music center off for ten seconds, then on again, to reestablish communication between the music center and the speakers. ? Check the connections for any external components. Make sure to select the correct source for the desired input. ? Check the speaker connections. ? Be sure the CD is placed correctly, label-side up, in the music center, and the cover is closed. ? Increase the volume. ? Check to see if MUTE is lit in the display. Press the MUTE button on the remote to unmute the sound. ? Disconnect any headphones. ? Connect the FM and AM antennas , and last but not least. Make sure there is power going to the remote speakers or the unit will not communicate with them. Good Luck
