TV picture distorted, bending in from the sides

All images on TV appear to be bent inwards also cannot see football scores and tables fully on sky sports I have a Symphonic 27 inch color television (flat screen tube) that was purchased in 2004... Recently the picture on the tv will spontaneously become distorted, bending in from the sides. Should I try and have it repaired or with the repair cost more than getting a new television set? Thanks! I recently graduated from college and money is tight :(

Thank you for the information, but can you provide more information.... Do you mean resolder the entire main board? Is it worth the money to try and fix it? Thanks!

Picture is distorted appears to bend inwards

I am assuming you are talking about the horizontal, if that is the case and the picture bends in from the sides it is likely there is an electrolytic capacitor dry or leaky, usually easy to recognise, look at the top of all the caps around the horizontal section and see if you can find one with a bulge at the top, replace it, look around where the scan coils are plugged into the main board and toward the horizontal output stage area, there are other things that can cause the same symptom however, I have found that to be the main cause. It is worth looking at the primary power supply stage especially the mains cap ( the largest capacitor there, usually 250v or higher,) remove it,( oh a word of warning- discharge it first, just in case) look at the bottom and look for leaks. if you have a cap tester, it will save time, if you can use and own a oscilloscope, look for ripples in the mains...hope that helps Phil

Distorted picture on my 32" Proscan TV...(about 15 years old)

The RCA GE sets have a problem with bad solder connections in the tuner unit which also causes numerous symptoms including poor regulation, no vertical deflection, low audio or dead set.

Pulling in from the sides is either poor regulation or a bad eeprom/solder join issue

Text/images overlap each other in 3 colors, 3D distorted picture

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick email and they will put one together for you. Their kits includes photo instruction guides, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

On CNN or during football games banner is cut off

It sounds like you're watching wide screen content on a 4:3 tv, so the screen may be zoomed in so that the bars that would normally be on the top and bottom are not showing. Because the picture is zoomed in, images that would be at the top and bottom are off the screen. If you're watching from a home receiver (Uverse, DirecTv, Xfinity, etc.) you need to change the video settings to let the receiver know that your TV's aspect ratio is 4:3 (full screen) and not 16:9 (widescreen). Also, if your channel lineup has the option of watching CNN on a standard definition channel, that would also help because the shape of the image would be what your tv was designed for. If you watch 16:9 programs, you will have to choose letter box mode (bars on top and bottom because the shape of the widescreen image does not match the shape of your tv), pillar box mode (bars on either side) zoomed, or stretched. Stretched will make the shape of everything appear distorted, as it squeezes a widescreen image on the sides to make it narrow enough, so that everyone will have tall and skinny heads like an old Kung Fu movie. The sharpest picture would likely be to watch 16:9 (hi def) content in letterbox mode (bars on top and bottom) so at least you get the proper aspect ratio that the sports were recorded in, and it comes from a sharper source (HD vs SD). I would just deal with the bars, because even with a widescreen tv, there will sometimes be bars because that's how programs are sometimes recorded, for different visual impact or cinematic effect.

Concaved distorted picture in 1080 Mitsubishi 65" TV.

This is a convergence rpoblem that is either bad connections on the pins of the convergence ICs or defective ICs. If you can solder and are comfortable working inside TVs where there are potentially dangerous high voltages, let me know and I'll provide additional details and instructions for fixing this yourself.

Aspect ratio problems on Samsung LN-S2651D Flat Panel TV

The aspect ratio (zoom) button on the cable remote had been changed. On Brighthouse the # button toggles through the zoom settings. It's not a tv issue, it's a cable fix.
