Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

CHKDSK comes up on start up and will not comple cycle.

I get a message each time I sttart up our compaq F730 note book. "CHKDSK is verifying file""Disks need to checked for consistency." It gets to 59 percent on the monitor than just stops. Does it on every startup. Tried a partial restore, wouldn't do it. Any ideas? Could it be a hardrive proble? The computer is litely used, one and a half years old. Thanks

Tip

How to check the PC system for errors, repair the damages or check disk.

1.) Go to 'Start'

2.) Press run and type CMD
(You will see a box eg: C:WINDOWSsystem32CMD.exe )

3.) Type CHKDSK , press enter
*CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3) You have to wait for a few seconds/minutes.
Then you will get a message 'run chkdsk with /F (fix) option to correct these'.

4.) Type CHKDSK /F . press enter
( *Remember there is a space between Chkdsk and F: chkdsk<space>/F )
Again, you will get a message 'chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

5.) Type Y
You will get a message ' This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.

6.) Now, exit the box and restart your computer.
It will the check the disk. You will see this on your screen as you restart 'A disk check has been scheduled. Windows will now check the disk (stage 1-5)'

*Note: It will take some time to check your system disk. You need to perform 'check disk' regularly so that you can speed up your PC performance and to repair damages in your system.
* You can try it on any kind of Windows PC.

My computer crashes a lot. How do I fix?

You may run or perform Disk Error Checking(This is for Windows XP SP3):
* Chkdsk (Chkdsk.exe) is a command-line tool that checks volumes for problems. The tool then tries to repair any that it finds. For example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors.

** How to run CHKDSK at the command prompt:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
  3. Use one of the following procedures:
  • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
  • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

  • Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

  • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press ENTER.
  • Once done with chkdsk r, run FIXBOOT and press ENTER.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

We did a fresh install but pc is way to slow.it takes 20-30 minutes to finally come up to the desktop.we have tried everything we know but no results.

My first guess is that your hard drive is failing. Try running chkdsk:
How to run Chkdsk at the command prompt
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
    3. Use one of the following procedures:
      • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
      • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk c:/f, and then press ENTER.

      • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press ENTER.

How to run Chkdsk from My Computer or from Windows Explorer
    1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
    2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
    3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
    4. Use one of the following procedures:
      • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
      • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select theAutomatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
      • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select theScan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then clickStart.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
If possible, I'd run this program (http://www.hdsentinel.com/) to check for disk errors as well/

BATTERY PROBLEM WITH HP PAVILLION DV2000 LAPTOP

It seems like you might have two problems.
My main concern right now is that you might have viruses or spyware. I would clean them out first before dealing with the battery. If you have your notebook powered off and you see the battery light charging, then wait 1 hour, and then try to turn it on without the ac adapter. if it still does not work, most likely the battery needs to get replaced.

to ger rid of the spyware, i would recommend the following

adware at www.lavasoft.com and spybot and www.safer-networking.org

    thanks adi

Desktop will not start.. will only go through Chkdsk

Try and tap F8 and see if you can boot to safe mode and go to my computer and rt click on C, and pick properties then tools, then
check for errors, and check auto, and scan.

Go to dell.com if you don't know who made the hard drive in your model. Then go to the mfg of the hard drive and download a hard drive diagnostic disk to check your hard drive for bad sectors.

You should go to dell.com and check your warranty and you can also ask dell what you should do.

This link posted below has a lot of drive mfg diagnostic tools.
