Dropping hard drives is never recommended, though most hard drives are designed to withstand a hefty impact of up to about 200G, which is equivalent to a drop from about 1inch onto a hard surface. If it is an empty drive, I would personally recommend replacing the drive with a new one. If it is an old drive, you should be able to start up the drive and retrieve some of your data, but again I would recommend replacing it ASAP.
