I tried to start my 93 FXLR Low Rider Custom yesterday and as soon as I hit the starter button the starter engaged for a brief second and then everything went dark on the bike.. I pulled the seat and found one of the battery terminals were loose so I tightened them both up and I checked to make sure the battery had a full charge.. It is as if a breaker blew but won't reset.. any ideas?
If you have a multimeter or a 12 volt test lead, find the fuses. when you look on top you will see two metal tags that you can put the multimeter leads on (of test lamps), if you get a voltage the fuse is blown.

Make sure battery has a full charge and both positive and negitave battery connections are clean and tight.Make sure unit is in nuteral and try to crank. If engine wont crank check starter selonid or relay. MAKE SURE BATTERY HAS A FULL CHARGE.
Your motor has gone bad. Think of the motor as a starter in a car. When you turn the key (press the start button) power is applied to the starter, to be specific, the stator also called the start winding, same as the dryer. Then the rotor takes over and the stator drops off. With your machine the rotor isn't engaging and the stator is taking the load and shutting down.
Hi,
Sounds like the solenoid relay is stuck up and shorted your starter!
Better check the starter, pull it down and look if the bendix drive is still intact, upon driving and engine is running the bendix drive is still engage, thus it might have broken and loosen up.
If you can't repair it, a mechanic can certainly repair it, hope that bendix drive is still okay, if damage is already done, just replace that part.
The solenoid that gives power and pushes the bendix drive is at fault, better check that too, it is the first one that malfunctioned and damages the bendix.
Hope that helps you out!

possible low battery--can you jump? If yes, charge battery. If bike will not jump, try hotwiring starter (put voltage directly to starter motor). If it will not turn with hotwire, replace starter.
On the handlebar switches, Harley hasn't changed the color code scheme very much over the years but you really need a good schematic to know exactly how they are wired up. If you can find either a Harley service manual for a 96 model or a Clymer's manual, it would be helpful. I have a schmatic for a 94 FXDWG that should be alright for your 93 FXR but you need a schmatic for a 96 model bike.
Hi Greg, the factory H.D Low rider had a factory steering head angle of 32 deg right up until 2006 when it reverted back to the 29 deg super glide frame, enjoy and good luck ride safe
