The start button goes directly to the motor to energize the start winding until the centrifugal switch in the motor energizes the run winding.
If the motor is not trying to start, I would next test the start switch & related connections.

- Start switch:
If you have a multimeter you can see if you get 120 volts at the end of the start switch (at the motor) when pushed -- this will confirm the start switch is good. Or, you can remove the start switch and test it for continuity when depressed.
Motor: (If you're going to be working with the motor, remove
the belt first.)
If start switch is good, you can disconnect it from the motor and jump 120 volts to the motor terminals -- if the start switch is getting 120 volts to the motor (in the above test), this is a redundant test, but it wold confirm the motor needs work.

P.S. Remember the door has to be closed when you are testing for voltage at the motor.
