I doubt a timer would work because it has electronic controls which would require manually setting the A/C when it is powered up.

You can test the concept by setting the A/C where you want it to come on if you had a timer, unplugging the unit for a few minutes, then plugging it back in. If it doesn't start up where you left it before it was unplugged, then a timer will not do the job you want it to do.

If it does come back on where you want it, a good timer to use for that unit would be an Intermatic hot water heater timer.

This rating is a "thanks for trying", so apparently you didn't like the answer. What did I miss?

Thanks for the additional info -- that would have been helpful. I agree you can't test it if you don't have it.

I doubt a timer will work. But I can't promise that -- you could call the manufacturer, but they probably wouldn't have a clue.

You could run the test I suggested on another unit, but other than that, I don't have any suggestions.

My Frigidaire ac wall unit will not come on when I press the power button. Model # is fam186r2a. It has power

It could have a defective switch, thermostat or compressor. Any of these would cause the same symptoms. Also a loose wire at a connection point.

Turn the timer slowly clockwise until the compressor and fans stop. Leave the timer alone in that position that turned the compressor and fans off for up to 35 minutes. In the first few minutes after the timer turned fans and compressor off you should be getting defrost. If timer comes on by itself and you have defrost results the timer and defrost heater are good. If the timer does not turn the refrigerator back on but the defrost took place then replace the timer. Every different refrigerator or freezer has a different amount of time on for cooling and time off for defrost so it is important to know what the model number is to answer the part number and time off/on ratio. What is the model number of the refrigerator that the timer is on? Sea Breeze

How do I wire a 24 hour timer

You posted under GE box-type electro-mechanical timer.
If this is not your timer, then add a comment with clear description of your timer.

GE box-timer wiring appears on following link.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-GE-15207-timer.html
I don't know why GE has so many different model numbers with the same wiring and programming instructions and exact same Load capabilities.
I do know some of these GE timers are prone to running fast, and maybe different models have improved circuit boards or timing clocks.
Caution: set dip switches before applying power to unit to avoid damage to timer.

Wiring on page above uses the NO terminals.
NO terminals are 'normally open,' which means these terminals turn ON only when timer turns ON.

NC or 'normally closed' terminals are ON at all times EXCEPT when timer turns ON.
When timer turns ON, the NC terminals turn OFF.

These GE timers can be wired for a wide variety of uses not shown on link above.
They can control multiple Loads in 120 and 240, and can control 24 volt loads.
However, they are not made for 3-phase.
If you add a comment with specifics of your wiring requirement, I will help more for free.

We need clear instructions for setting the timer

Woods makes several outdoor timers:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html

Image that shows with this post is Woods model #49647.
Below are instructions for #49647 timer.

If your timer is different, add a comment with model number and I'll post instructions for that timer.

Woods model #49647 is outdoor timer with photoelectric control that turns timer ON at dusk.
There are 4 possible settings that show on dial.
Rotate dial to make timer selection.
OFF = timer is OFF full-time until you change dial.
ON = timer is ON full-time until you change dial.
Dusk-Dawn = timer turns ON at dusk and OFF at dawn
2, 4, 6, 8 hours = timer turns ON at dusk, and turns OFF 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours later.

I need the serial number for my Fridgidaire FAM186R2A AC

Yes the front cover is the same as the grille.

You should see the plate with the serioal and model number on the chasis after you remove the grille.

Good luck.

IMy freezer is not getting cold enough anymore

We need to check to see if your freezer is defrosting properly. I am pretty sure your refrigerator has a defrost timer located inside the fresh food compartment behind the control panel. Unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear panel inside the freezer to have a good look at the evaporator. If frozen over defrost with a hair dryer. Then let me know so we can test the defrost heater and thermostat. Your model shows a defrost timer and that is the most likely reason if you find the freezer evaporator coils frozen over. See if you can locate the timer first and turn the timer slowly clockwise until compressor stops. Wait 25 minutes and the timer should turn the compressor back on. If it does not the the timer will need replaced. Let me know what you find, Thanks, Sea Breeze
