V:\ is not accessible Error performing inpage operation

I was de-fragmenting my external hard drive and it was at about 33% when the power went out. When I went to resume, I now get a error message that says: V:\ is not accessible Error performing inpage operation. This is my video drive and has all my video's on it as well as other important information. This drive has been working great up until the power outage during de-frag.

It shows up in the My computer window on the other computer, but when I double click on it, I still get the "is not accessible Error performing inpage operation.

Ok guys, I have done the following: Click "Start", "Run...", type "cmd" and click [OK] or press [Enter].
From the command line type "chkdsk V:\ /F". You can optionally include
the "/R" option to check for bad sectors on the disk (Be patient, this
will take a long time, especially if there are bad secors).

If this fails, add the "/X" option. This dismounts the volume before
proceding. You may need to reboot afterwards before examining the drive.

Here is the message I am receiving after starting each step: Insufficient disk space to fix attribute definition table. Also another that said: Insufficient disk space to fix volume bitmap. CHKDSK aborted.

Managed to save most of the files to my C drive. Could not delete any files from the V drive that is giving me grief. So decided to format the V drive, and it cannot complete the task. Now What?

Oh, and yes I am running XP OS on my computer. Just to clarify operating system if the question comes up. I'm off to work and won't be able to look into this until tomorrow evening. Thanks in advance folks you are the best.

How do I delete a partition?

Does your external hard-drive work when you connect it to a different computer? If so, run "Check Disk" on that drive from the other computer.

To expand upon what ikkenom said, this will work much better done from the command line.

(Assuming Windows XP)
Click "Start", "Run...", type "cmd" and click [OK] or press [Enter]. From the command line type "chkdsk V:\ /F". You can optionally include the "/R" option to check for bad sectors on the disk (Be patient, this will take a long time, especially if there are bad secors).
If this fails, add the "/X" option. This dismounts the volume before proceding. You may need to reboot afterwards before examining the drive.

A MS article describing this error implies that is is likely a physical disk error and the technical reason why the error mistakenly implies a paging fault: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;141117

I know how distressing it can be to loose pictures and video you've worked so hard to acquire/produce. Good luck!

If none of this works, start looking for a file recovery program like Recuva, DiskDigger, or PC Inspector (http://www.pcinspector.de./Sites/file_re...) (a few of freeware options).

In fact here is a list of 17 free recovery options. I haven't tried them all, but I find this site an invaluable source of freeware.

    Again, Good Luck!

You're really not going to like the Microsoft answer to this:

"Delete some unneeded files from the NTFS volume, if you can, and then retry the Chkdsk command. If you cannot delete any files, you will have to reformat the NTFS volume and restore data from backup." - From http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libra...

The good news is that you have another option - cloning.

No, not genetic cloning, but disk cloning. You'll need to purchase an external drive that is larger than the existing V:\ drive AND the necessary software (Acronis TrueImage or Symantec Ghost).

For this to work you will need to select options telling the software to do a "raw image" (Symantec language - means 'copy sector by sector the entire drive') and to 'ignore all errors'.

Once done reboot with only the new larger drive and run the command line 'chkdsk' options just as before.

If none of this works your only other option is a data recovery service like OnTrack - $500-$1,500.

    Again, Good Luck!

Instead of formatting, have you tried deleting the partition first? If you do and the hd either won't recreate the partition or won't format the newly created partition you're looking a damaged HD.

Were you able to get all the data off that you needed? Hope so.

Access denied, error performing inpage operation

Click Start, Click RUN and type cmd and Enter. You'll be in command window - then type chkdsk [drive:] /F (such as - "chkdsk e: /F") which should perform a repair. It will probably require a restart. Do not touch the keyboard during restart.

I have external hard disk 500g seagate. it dosen't open and disapper not accessible (error performing inpage operation)" message. what do i? it's very important for me.

Hi ahmad1353,

You might be experiencing some problem with the hard drive itself so here's what you can try;

Open command prompt(if your using Windows): Click start -> Run(if your using Windows 7 just type CMD on the start search) type CMD and press Enter.

On the Command Prompt(black screen with a blinking cursor) type the following command;

chkdsk [drive:] /F - wherein [drive] is the drive letter for you Seagate external hard drive(to check just double clieck MyComputer(Computer for Windows 7) and look for the drive letter. This should scan the external hard drive for any problems and hopefully provide a fix for you to be able to access your files.

1. I need to know the brand name , model number , or motherboard you have

2. I need to know what operating system you are using

and when you say open , in what manor do you mean open , in what way are you attempting to open the drive and with what program , so far it looks like you may need to reinstall the computers operating system from scratch , because something is dead wrong , and it looks like a file system error , as if your computer operating system is no longer able to access files properly.

I consider your situation unresolved at this time untill you can give me more information.

I'm trying to reach guru status here in order to help people like you in a far more proper manor.

together we can solve it.
