Question about Microsoft Life Cam Vx-5000 Webcam

1 Answer

Microsoft VX-5000 Webcam

I have just installed my VX-5000 webcam but I can't video call on webcam. In fact, I can't even change the audio/video setting as the button for it is greyed off. Recently bought a Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000, it installed correctly and I can take pics and make videos fine. When trying to video call from cam to cam, I can see and hear the other person just fine and they can hear me, BUT they cannot see me. I get a grey box with an image of a webcam with a red X through it. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Normal 0 See section C. Windows Live Messenger in the info below to setup the Audio & Video.
Also send this to your family and friends so they have their computer setup properly.
Web Camera’s have to be setup on the program they are to be used with. Just installing the camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.
Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for the Audio and Video to function properly.
A. Skype Setup:
After downloading and installing Skype (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/download/skype/windows/beta/downloading/) set it up as follows:

  1. Go to Tools, then Options, and click on Audio Settings and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  2. Then click on the Video Settings.
  3. The camera if Installed Properly will come up and show a video picture.
  4. Then, on the bottom of the page click on Save.
The camera and audio should function properly. Your friends and Family will now be able to see and her to you.

  1. Windows Live Messenger:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d78f2ff1-79ea-4066-8ba0-ddbed94864fc&displaylang=en
  1. After you start Windows Live Messenger, expand the view by clicking on the square on top left next to the red X.
  2. Then on the Windows Live messenger window on the right side, click on “ “Show Menus.” And then click on “Show the Menu Bar”.
  3. Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on “ “Action.”
  4. Go to “TOOLS” and click “Audio and Video Setting” and follow the instructions.
NOTE: Your audio and video should work. Enjoy.
When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to.
Hope this helps. Bud

Thru the program your using for the microphone, see if there is a way to change the volume thru there just to make sure the program isn't messing up the microphone.

If you still can't get it to work then we know the microphone portion of the webcam is definitely defective but at least in this way we will havve verified it properly.

Use the Calll menu to setup your audio device and then your Video device

Click Call, select audio, select your camera as the audio device since it has the mic.

Click call, select video, select your camera.

I hope this helps you resolve your Skype issue.

Test your webcam here to make sure it broadcasts ok - Hit 'Allow' in the top window and check your cam in the left hand panel.

http://www.testmycam.com/

Having proved your cam is working ,you can configure it to WLM (MSN)

CONFIGURE SOFTWARE to MSN
Its good practice to disconnect and re-connect your webcam before you start - if you have been using it elsewhere the MSN software may have difficulty in locating it, even if you exited the previous program correctly.
The reason being, the webcam software can remain hooked-up to a program and needs to be rebooted.
Mine, I just unplug it from the USB and plug it back in to reboot the software.
If yours is integral with the computer you will have to re-start the computer, use a keyboard shortcut or disable / enable the webcam from the Device Manager.

Open MSN
Click 'Open Menu'
From 'Tools; navigate to, and click, 'Audio and Video setup'
Set your speakers
Click 'Test' - if OK, move on.
Set your mic as default
Use the slider to set volume and test.
Click 'Next'
This takes you to the video setup
Your webcam should be broadcasting - if not - make sure the webcam is set as default - restart MSN
Use 'Webcam Settings'to fine tune the picture.
Click 'Finish'
