Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

1 Answer

Refrigerator stops cooling

I have a Kenmore Side-by-Side refrigerator (106.58539700) that has just recently been having problems. Today was the second time that I came home and found that the freezer and fridge were warm. I played with the temperature knobs a little bit and it came back on a short time later, but I'm just waiting for it to stop working again. The lights and everything else still work, but the unit just stops cooling for some reason. I have only had the unit for about a year, and I'm suprised to find this sort of problem at this point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Is there any way to tell if the problems lies with the thermostat versus the relay on the condenser, or the defrost timer?

My kenmore refrigerator side by side

All the cooling takes place in the freezer and is blown over to the frig side so the frig side will start to warm up soon. Possible cause is the starting device to the compressor is faulty, compressor motor locked up or cold control faulty and not closing.

Refrigerator and freezer not cooling/freeding

Possibly a defrost circuit problem -

1) Bad defrost thermostat
2) Bad defrost heater
3) Bad defrost timer
4) Failed evaporator fan motor.

Look for frost accumulated inside the louvers at the back panel, top and bottom. If you see it, remove food from freezer and put in ice chest. Take out shelves, get hair dryer and warm the backside of the freezer, directing air down the louvers. Then leave to sit for 4-6 hours with the freezer door open. Put towels in the bottom of the freezer to catch any melted ice.
After period of time, plug unit back in and power the unit back up. Once you know it's cooling, empty ice chests back into freezer.

If there is a problem in any of the above components, then it will show up in 3-4 weeks witht he same problem again.

I also have the same refrigerator model 106.56566400 and periodically when the power goes off in the house the refrigerator & freezer will stop cooling. Try pushing the on/off button located inside the refrigerator to the left of the digital temperature controls. Hold the button down, this turns the unit off, then press it again to turn it back on. This basically resets the refrigerator, and most of the time works to get the refrigerator cooling again. Try this first before calling a repair man.
