Question about GE JTP20 Electric Single Oven

1 Answer

Door on GE JTP18 oven does not close tightly.

Replacement of hinges has been recommended. Is this an easy repair for a novice? Where can I find written instructions?

This hinge has snapped in two Can it possible be welded back together again?

It depends on what material it is made from. The easy answer is yes most materials can be successfully welded but some materials are more problematic than others and need specialist equipment and skills.
If the material is mild steel you will have no trouble getting the welding done once the hinge has been removed from the door and the oven. I think that could be the major problem of the exercise.

A hinge wouldn't break for no reason. I think it would be wise to discover the reason before carrying out a repair. I suggest checking the price and availability of a new replacement hinge from the manufacturer before going ahead. The broken hinge might be a design flaw (whoever heard of a broken oven door hinge?) and a replacement might be a modified part that would resist breaking.

It is possible a new part could be cheaper than having it welded but you won't know until you check.

Hinge receivers for u1661

I had this EXACT same problem and the hinge receivers WERE THE PROBLEM!

Easy fix. All you need is a Phillips head screw driver (cross head that is) and about 30 minutes.

1. First off remove the oven door.
2. pull out over so that you can easily access the rear
3. Disconnect oven from the electricity (make sure the mains power is OFF before you do this)
4. Remove the back panel by unscrewing all the screws
5. turn oven over onto its side and remove the bottom panel (more screws)
6. You can now get to the receiver - its held inplace by 1 screw just inside the oven door above the receiver (and maybe another 1 on the side, but i cant remember).
7. Undo screw(s),slide out receiver, replace and put back together in the reverse order.

Honestly, it is very easy (I did it with no help, idea and 1 have 10 sausages for fingers).

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Yes this has been a fairly common issue with the Thermador wall ovens as well as their freestanding ranges.

Typically the remedy will be replacing the hinges, but there is a "fix" you can attempt in the interim. At least in hope of keeping the oven light from being on all the time, hence damaging the control board which houses the oven lights transformer.

The issue with those Thermador wall oven and freestanding range doors ( especially on the freestanding "professional" line ) is the weight of the door is so great, the hinge will actually move slightly over time, other times the entire hinge will need to be replaced.

This is what I'd recommend ( also official Thermador remedy, rest assured as I am a authorized factory trained Thermador service provider ) before pronouncing the hinges need replacing though.

**This does require a somewhat involved repair, so if you don't feel completely comfortable or have any reservation to trying this, please call in an local authorized Thermador ( B/S/H/ ) service provider.**

Recommendation: Adjust the door box hinge per instructions below.

1. Pull the oven away from the wall about 12".

2. Remove the hinge box cover plates.

3. Remove the vertical side trim piece. It covers one of the screws that must be loosened.

4. Loosen the 4 screws that secure the hinge box.

5. Place a rolled up dishtowel at the bottom of the door and close the door and apply light pressure to the door while re-tightening the four screws.

See fig below

6. Re-install the hinge box covers & side trims.

7. Re-install and secure the oven.

That should do it, ( or as stated, improve the situation ) if the hinges are too far gone they will need to be replaced unfortunately.

Let me know if you require further assistance or if indeed this solved your problem.

Thank you for choosing FixYa today and good luck going forward.

Are there replacement door hinges available and how difficult are they to replace

Door hinges are usually available to purchase as a seperate item, you should replace them both together, usually, they are fairly easy to fit.

Neff FD7903 Oven Drop down front door no longer fully closes & is getting worse - are the hinges adjustable?

I'm afraid not.

"Drooping" doors are very common on Neff ovens - I've had to replace a couple of sets - and seem very sensitive to things being placed on the door whilst in the open position, e.g. roasting tins whilst basting a bird/joint.

Replacement hinges are available - just Google your model number and the sponsored results will include several companies who can supply them - not cheap, but much less than a replacement oven.

Hinge snapped on Nardi EK95583AC Range cooker

I have the same problem and am about to replace both hinges and hinge runners (http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk) recommend you should replace both hinges as if one is gone the other will follow soon. The section on the hinge gives a good account on how to replace the hinges safely and how to get to the runners that may need getting into the inside of the oven by removing the sides. I havent gone through this yet so cannot honestly give any more advice other than whats out on the web.

Zanussi ZBF 660 oven door requires removing to access replacement of inner glass

Hi BisseeCath,

Not sure if you still need to get your oven door off still but I have the same oven and have spent the last several hours trying to remove it and searching the web to discover how to remove it until I have just discovered a wonderful video tutorial on YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSzc4Uqbbr8
that discribes exactly how to do it (just copy and paste it into your address bar.
It is the fourth and final instruction in the video but it really is easy.
The hinge is a latching over system type that folds back into the glass apparently.
Just get a screwdriver and where the end of the hinge dissappears into the housing of the oven just flick up the hinge with the screwdriver and the locking mechanism folds back towards you and the glass.
Once both are done just jiggle and pull up the door and it will remove easily....godsend!

It might be because when the door was completely removed ( which they do rather easily for repairs and moving) it wasn't put back properly.
I would suggest you remove the oven door and re install.
You do not remove any screws or anything like that to remove the oven doors.
When you have the oven door open squeeze each hinge and shift then both outwards it will release the door from the hinge, the hinge stays on but the door will slide off the hindge. Afterwards check the alignment and reinstall the oven door
