IF I START THE CAR AND LET IDLE, IT CAN IDLE FOR OVER HALF AN HOUR AND IT DOES NOT SHUT DOWN ON ITS OWN. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN I'M DRIVING.
SOURCE: car will start fine but will shut off as soon as I place in gear.
Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Try replacing your Engine Coolant Temp Sensor, it's cheap and easy to replace. Just remember do it when the coolant is cool to work with before you start cracking a pressurized system.

There is a wire harness going to the transmission , you may want to check connection at the transmission itself. Right front corner of the trany , just above a/t flud pan , restricted view because of heat shield. But what you looking for is round electrical plug(about 2in diameter) , if you see any oil or wetness on that plug , you need to change plug adapter. Part is about $10 from dealer.Part # A 203 540 02 53.Mercedes call it a pilot bushing. There are two robber o-rings on it, wich getting old and start leaking oil inside electrical connector.Sometimes it may ruin a/t control module TCM.
Hope that may help.
