I teach High school photo also, and three of my battery covers also broke apart last year. I will try to get some replacements from freestyle, but since this seems to be happening a lot, shouldn't replacements be available through Vivitar?

Same thing!  I've had my camera for about three years and the battery door recently crumbled.  The Vivitar site only shows the digital models.  Where can I get a replacement piece?

I called Freestyle Photographic Supplies, where the cameras were bought, and they said several people have complained about the battery door problem. They are replacing my damaged doors at no cost, but are putting people on a waiting list until the parts arrive.

Good luck,

I am in the same position with broken battery covers. A local camera shop has been ordering replacements for me. They said the battery cover from Nikon fits the Vivitar but this can only be ordered from an authorized dealer. Try a local camera store.
Hope this helps

Can I replace the latch or change the full internal chamber?

this part is available with Nikon agency, to replace this you have to open the whole camera, then detach the front portion, it doesn't matter, just a piece of rubber or sponge fix on the battery lid, this will be help full to hold the battery at contact perfectly.

Cant get my pictures downloaded onto my computer from the card reader

On the front, where the camera lens is, is the door you can open to take out the battery if it will not turn off. Hold the camera upside down, and use your thumbs to force the door to side off - it's not always easy to do. Push from the lens, toward the "Vivitar" name.
I have the same model, and mine just started doing this last month, and I've had it for almost 2 years now. Maybe it's just not recognizing the Off command from the button like it used to. I don't know. But taking the battery out always kills it. Then, put the battery back in (correctly) to use the cam again.

I dropped my Nikon Coolpix s230 and the orange piece that held the battery is missing so the camera won't turn work. How can I fix it?

Hi, thats called the battery hold or leg. The camera still should power on without it, it is just
used to hold the battery in place while you swap out memory cards. Try to power on the unit
with the door open while holding the battery in place with your finger to see if the battery hold is truly the problem. If it powers on then you can probably find a replacement battery hold
on Ebay or Ecrater for fairly cheap. The problem is installation, its fairly involved and would
require complete disassembly. I could give you the disassembly steps once you get to that point.

Battery door broken

Check Ebay for your model camera. Look for one that is broken/as is, you can use it for spare parts and usually pretty cheap.

Vivitar Digital Camera 3915 wont turn on!!

The main reason for this problem is the design of the contact plates for the batteries terminals. From inside of the battery compartment lid, you can find two tiny prong shape metal spring. One has small pieces of plastic guides for holding the positive terminal in place. The problem can develope pretty early, depends on how often you open the lid. That spring like metal piece is too delicate to be shifted out of place, even just a very, very slight shft can rest the tiny plastic pieces at the tip of the prong to rest on top of the battery terminal. Using some kind of batteries with bigger, or not too round terminals can contribute to the same problem, even the metal prongs are not shifted. Solution: Check the available batteries that you have, and use those with smaller terminal tips to power the camera. If still not turning on, then the prong(s) might be shifted a little bit. It is hard to check if the prong tips are fully in contact with the battery terminals, because after you push down the lid, it needs to be pushed in to lock. So you can only see they are good in contact before fully pressed down and pushed in. One of the best way is to use some kind of tools to remove the tiny plastic pieces at the tip, but make sure the prong tips still be able to get in contact with the terminals. I, myself just remove the two spring prongs and cut a piece of copper (the old metal tie for electric wiring) a bit longer then the inner length of the lid across, bent the copper strip slightly and sit it on top of the metal door glider. Press down to ensure the ends of the coppper strip touch and stay firm to both inner ledges of the lid. Now, before closing the lid. Cut a piece of plastic (from a ziploc bag) to a size that fits to be slid between the copper strip and the metal door glider. This forms a isolation between the two meatl pieces, the reason is the rubbing of the two metal pieces, if in contact, can cause the batteries installed to be drained faster than to power up the camera itself. This is important, or you will have a new problem with the camera. Finally, as long as you know what you want to do is to ensure a good contact of the prongs and the terminals. You may fine tune and use some other materials to achieve the goal. Your camera might have a different fault developed other than the above findings of mine that is the cause of not powering up. Good luck, Paul
