Amana bb20 bottom freezer refridgerator stopped cooling

Amana bb20 stopped cooling 1 week after it started making a tinny transformer sound while running. This sound occurs about every 15 minutes. I unplugged the unit for a day and then vacumned all the dust from the coils and condenser, When I plugged it in after 24 hours it worked fine for about 6 hours and then it stopped cooling. The condenser fan works and the condenser is only warm to the touch.
Any suggestions?

Check the defrost timer, rotate it until a solid click is heard. If your unit starts to work replace that timer. Good Luck

SOURCE: Problem with Whirlpool side by side refrigerator

sounds like a defrost problem ...
maybe the heater or defrost thermostat is bad...

he should bypass the timer and jump the heater to see if its woking...if not then i would remove the heating element for further testing. if the heater checked ok..it would only leave the defrost timer to blame.

good luck

SOURCE: refrigerator is not cooling

Good day,
You will need an ohm meter to check the parts.
Your defrost system has failed.
It is made up of 3 components, 2 of which are located behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment.
Remove the rear panel. There is a cooling coil, that has a calrod heating element that runs along it's bottom. As well there is a defrost thermostat ( a small round 1" disk) which is located on the top of the same coil. Both should be checked with an ohm meter to test for continuity. The heater should read no more than 30 ohms, the thermostat ( IT MUST STILL BE COLD BELOW 30 DEGREES) should read zero ohms. Note: The heater rarely fails, the thermostat has a high failure rate.

The third item is a timer, or a solid state adaptive defrost control. Depending on age, and model, it is located , behind the kick plate on the bottom front.
Or, in the fresh food compartment on the roof.
If it is a timer, you can turn the timer shaft when the machine is running until the machine shuts off. With it still turned on, wait 40 minutes.
If the machine turns itself back on, the timer is O.K. if not, the timer is bad, and needs replaced.
If the Main heater checks O.K. and it has a solid state control, then replace the thermostat in the freezer compartment, and the solid state board.

Below is an excellant tutorial on defrost systems.

My amana upright freezer was working fine, but transported it to another location when I plugged it back in, it started to make a buzzing noise. How do I turn this off or fix it?

Hello....First...when you transported the freezer...you must sure the unit stays in the vertical position and not laying on it's side...back..or front....If the freezer is making buzzing noises...adjust the thermostat setting down until the buzzing stops...and increase the setting gradually until the desired temp is reached...it could take 24 hours for it to stablize...I hope this was helpful.....PEACE.......

My amana upright gets cool but not cold enough to freeze probably not even as cold as a fidge. the problem started when we moved and stored it out in a shop that was partially heated. since then we have...

Good day,
Somewhat handicapped not knowing if it's a conventional freezer or frost free.
1. If it's frost free check to see if the fan motor is running in the freezer compartment.
2. As well if it has a fan motor in the compressor compartment, see if it is running as well.

3. If it is a conventional model, make sure it is turned on and make sure it is running. If running, then it has lost it's refrigerant charge or the compressor has lost it's pumping capacity.

4. If it is item 3, then unless it's less then 5 years old, the sealed
system/compressor problem is so pricey that it's not a practical repair. If under 5 years Amana will pay for these repairs, whether it's conventional or frost free.

Freezer compressor running, but no cooling

If the compressor is running and there's no cooling, chances are you have a sealed system leak somewhere. Meaning the machine has lost it's refrigerant charge. Pretty much need a set of gages at this point and start checking for potential leaks.
