Question about Belkin Wireless Pre-N (F5D8230-4) Router (F5D82304)

WD My Book 1TB not recognised by belkin modem router USB storage

I have just bought a Belkin N+ Wireless Modem-Router (model F5D8635-4 v1). It comes with a USB port in the back of the router. The back of the box says "you can connect any USB storage device to the N+ wireless modem router. Then you can easily share and access documents, videos, photos, and other files with multiple computers over a secure wirelss network, or simply back up files". I thought this was a great idea because it would allow we to create some networked storage without spending big on a NAS. The setup required is to install a program called "Belkin storage manager" on to each computer in the network that wishes to access the USB storage that is plugged into the modem router. Anyway the modem router and wireless all work perfectly. And with a USB 2GB flash drive drive plugged in all computers can easily access and write to the files on the USB drive which appears on the My Computer screen as a network drive. However, it just does not work with the WD My Book 1TB essential edition external USB hard drive I have. When the WD my book is plugged in to the modem router the USB storage LED on the front of the modem router remains unlit. The WD drive appears to be powered off - no hard drive spinning noise, no glowing blue light at the front. This drive works fine when plugged directly into any of my computers or my PS3. The WD My Book has not been formatted since it was bought, checking on its properties reveals it is in FAT32. I have only use XP Pro on my machines, and I have saved a PS3 back up on the drive. I believe the WD My Book 1 TB comes with a power saving function that causes it to automatically power down when your computer is switched off. I can only guess that when the WD my book is plugged into the modem router it decides that it is not connected to a working computer so it powers itself down. Is there anyway around this? Should I take my belkin modem router back to the shop and try the ASUS DSL-N13? Belkin level two tech support has basically shrugged their shoulders and said their device works with every known USB device and therefore its WD's problem. WD have said it was never meant to be a network drive so bad luck. Many thanks in advance for any thoughts. Also I'd be interested to know of peoples experiences using these USB storage sharing features on some of the newer routers. I have exactly the same problem. In my case with a 750GB Trekstor stays unlit when connected to the N+ Belkin N+ Router with USB Storage does not work with USB Drive (Enclosure w/IDE), nor with Memory Stick (jump drive). No interface or configuration settings allow for any form of diagnostics, et al. Router find, USB Storage - non existent.

Regardless of what cable I use or what powered hard disk or memory device i use the Belkin refuses to see the USB drive.

I have a Belkin N+ Wireless Modem Router F5D8635-4 v1 and I also have a 1TB drive connected which it simply does not read from any computer in spite of the fact that the storage manager is running and the blue light on the router is on.

The firmware for the router is available, but you have to bug Belkin to get it. How you can compile it is another question. The firmware is a version of Linux, which, if you compile the proper USB drivers into it, may support devices on the USB port.

At present time Belkin only supports a select number of devices. This is due to the device list that exists in the firmware, and what the router is expecting as a USB drive.

After a firmware upgrade I did get a flash drive to work, but not a USB hard disk. This remains an issue.

...and yes, the power was plugged into the hard disk...and turned on...

  • Harry Skelton Dec 13, 2009

Yes. After 24+ years in the IT industry, I am aware that the little thingy plugs into the spot on the whatchamacallit...AND...(this may come as a shock to you) that I know where the off-on switch is, and know how to use it!!

Aside from the sarcasm -- most USB flash drives do not come with power adapters. Many USB hard disks also do not require power adapters.

It should be noted that the Belkin does not supply enough power to a USB hard disk to run. And, as I have posted, the firmware is the problem with the Belkin. Even when the firmware is Linux, the drivers they used were home rolled. The source is publicly available. I just haven't had time to roll it into something better.

The router also has limited memory for the firmware. So they left a lot of stuff out that should be there. In most people's case, they left the supported USB device list out of the driver.

Too bad the folks at Belkin don't care to fix things.

  • Harry Skelton Jan 12, 2010

The solution is to use something else. Belkin does not support all USB drives on their router. They have only a limited number of supported drives, and even then, it is a **** shoot. Belkin offers the source code to their router but not how to compile it. Thus, one would be able to load a small linux OS that has all the USB support AND possibly NAS/Firewall stuff too. For now, the router works well and is fast. The USB support sucks. I f you buy it for that (like I did) I would advise otherwise.

When you connected the hard drive, did you also connect the power adapter to the hard drive?

If I understand correctly ... You have not connected the drive to a computer.

If I am not mistaken the WD My Book has preinstalled backup software installed on it. It very well might also have a power down built as part of that programming. Try attaching it to a computer to verify this.

Assuming the backup software needs blank drive to work correctly I would first access the drive select all and delete anything you find (if you know how to unhide hidden files do that before you select and delete all) ... As a 2nd option I would just reformat the drive.

Hope that helps....

Couple of other things to try

I beleive your WD My Book has a external power supply... if it us usb then you might have a issue as someone suggested. Note that the Router can supply a maximum of 500mA of current to the port, so it is recommended that the hub be externally powered. Additionally, some USB hard drives require more than 500mA and must be externally powered to function.

    Next I would look to see if you Firmware and storage manager softwere are the latest;
    http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/prod...

you could try the newer model version software also

    http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/prod...

Try a manual connect if you can get it to stay on
you do not need to install the Storage Manager in order to access your storage device. Open a file explorer window and type in the address field:
    \\192.168.2.1\DeviceName
where “DeviceName” is the name that was assigned to the storage device.
Your Belkin N+ Wireless Modem Router supports up to four USB storage devices through a separate USB hub (not included).

SOURCE: WD My Book 1TB not recognised by belkin modem router USB storage

I have a work around for this.

In the detail of the Belkin manuals it says you can attach up to 4 USB storage devices via a USB HUB.

I had an old Hub so I Connected the HUB to the router and the Maxtor to the HUB --- It worked :-) It came up in a few seconds.

At first I powered the HUB but later took the power out of the hub and it still worked ;-} However when I used a different HUB it would not work without power to the HUB.

The HUB I use is an old Belkin 4 port Tetra Hub. The newer 7 port Belkin HUB (5 Rear 2 Top) only worked with the HUB powered.

Hope this helps untill Belkin Upgrade the Router sofrtare.

I need help with belkin n150 model F7D1401 V1 ..i can't connect to my network..i have a Huawei SmartAx Mt 882 modem..and i want to connect my network, wich is an ADSL one, to my computer..I can't...

Your MT 882 modem most likely has a DHCP Server that will interfere with the ip address of the router. Did you plug the Router directly into the laptop then go to dos prompt and type in ipconfig/renew . Or reboot the laptop !
Then type in 192.168.2.1 into browser
You need to work out the IP address of your 882 modem and then change the dhcp server leases on it to start at 20 like it might be 10.0.0.1 to 1.0.0.254 or it could be 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 .
if you are planning on using both devices on the network !
Make the Modem DHCP start at 192.168.2.20 to 192.168.2.254 and then make the Belkin router / modem ip address be 192.168.2.2 and the 882 modem 192.168.2.1 if you plan on using the two devices together on the network disable the belkin dchp server.
if you are using just the belkin then the reboot or ipconfig/ renew will be all you need .

it says the HDD is not compatible with the router.... it might be due to the file system in HDD....
At this moment, the Belkin N+ Router and Modem-Router, F5D8235 and F5D8635 work with the FAT, FAT32, and NTFS file systems only.

Versions of the F5D8235 firmware earlier than 1.01.24 may fail to detect a drive that contains a mix of supported and unsupported file systems. This was fixed in firmware 1.01.24, available from the Belkin UK Support Site

We have seen a few compatibility problems with drives not being recognised and we are investigating these to get them fixed.

We have also seen occasions where a drive was not detected by the router or modem-router due to a poor quality USB cable. If a bus-powered drive does not spin up, the first thing to do is to make sure that a good quality cable is used. Even self-powered drives may fail to be recognised when using poor quality cables. Even though the cable may work when the drive is connected direct to a PC, always try a different (good quality) cable as part of troubleshooting drive detection problems.

Tech Support: If you come across a drive that is not being recognised by the Router or Modem-Router, please check on the hidden page http://192.168.2.1/storage_disk.html if the router has detected anything at all. Make sure that the drive works when connected directly to a Windows computer and try a good quality USB cable as mentioned above.

  • First off, the WD hard drive was meant to be connected to a computer.
  • Therefore connect it to the fastest computer you have or the one running the network.
  • Make that drive a network drive.
  • Set the router to handle DHCP using the web based interface (192.168.1.1 on a linksys router, check your manual for the IP address belkin)
  • The drive apparently has three volumes on it: X: Y: and Z: (network drives)
  • I would backup the WD drive and reformat in NTFS format
  • I dont believe that these drives were meant to be networked. Therefore you get what you get....

This is not as complicated as it may sound. You don't need the manager. Bring up the "run" window (XP - Start - Run / Vista Alt-R). Enter the following address [\\192.168.2.1] press enter. The drive will show up. Right click on it and select Map Network Drive. You can then uninstall the useless program from Belkin.
