Transfer movie from mini tape to computer - JVC GR-D770U

I just bought my first digital video camera. A JVC GR-D779U. It uses the small mini tapes. There are no instructions on transferring the data from the camera/tapes to my computer. I assumed it would be simple. I have no clue how to do this. I hook up the video camera with the tape in it to my computer via a USB port, turned the camera to "play" and assumed some software would magical appear on my computer to walk be through this.
