You can also disable messenger from running by right clicking on START > Explore > Program Files > and rename messenger, for example, rename it to 'messenger disable'. This way it will be there if you ever need it by renaming/removing the word disable.

To unistall, go into control panel, then "add and remove programs", then click "add/remove windows components". From here you can view programs like msn, and all other accessories. Untick the msn live box, and click next.
