Question about Maxtor OneTouch III Turbo Edition (C01W015) 1.5 TB FireWire 400 (1394a) Hard Drive

1 Answer

Data retrieval from crash

I have a 2TB external drive that has the click of death. It was fairly new so I didn't have a back up. Are there two 1TB drives in a raid that I could take apart and get the data from one of the drives (voiding the warranty) or is the data just gone? Thanks.

It isn't set up at all, it's just a single 2TB external drive that crashed after 3 months. Since it is wide enough to accommodate two 1TB drives, I am hoping that is the case so I'd have a chance to retrieve some of the data by putting the (good) drive in another enclosure.

But if is a single drive there is little point to opening the case and voiding the warranty, unless you know a do it yourself way to get the data back. If you do, please advise.

    Thanks again.

Ok Etfactor,

I haven't had my hands on this particular model before so I had to do a little research. If The drive was setup as the Mirrored RAID option(only 1TB of useable space) then there is a simple DIY option I can help you with but it will void your warranty.

If it was setup, as you implied, as a 2TB stripe set, then there is no simple method to recover the drive array and it will recover considerable help from a data recovery pro. The reason it is so much more difficult is that in a stripe blocks of data are divided even bytes/odd bytes between the two drives. This provides exceptional performance but at double the risk of failure, and more than twice the trouble to recover.

If you can verify which config you were using, I can provide appropriate next steps for you. If it was set up as a 2TB stripe, also provide me with your region and city info and I will recommend an appropriate facility to assist you.
