Question about Kelvinator 12 cu. ft. / 340 liter Chest Freezer KDC-47

1 Answer

Meat along the outside seems to be thawing out.

I am not sure which way to turn the dial on the side of a chest freezer to decrease the temp.

There are no numbers on the dial, only an arrow... turning the dial counter clockwise will decrease the temp, ie make it freeze harder?

  • freezerquest May 31, 2009

I have had it turned as far counter clockwise as the dial will go. The compressor is running constantly but does not seem to be getting colder??? Recharge time?? Is that something that can be done easily or am I looking at a toss-up between paying a tech and buying a new freezer???

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the help Vic, there likely will not be a repair tech around here for a couple of days, likely monday some time. Is there anything we can do to get the contents to last until then? There is no other freezer available...

Thanks for your help. I will see what happens come the morning. If it is not better I may be making a long roadtrip to the nearest city. Or I just might be having one heck of a huge BBQ!

HI, If you want the temp warmer, move the control to the smaller #'s
If there are no #'s, turn the control clockwise and see if it shuts off. if it shuts off, that is the right direction for warmer temps.
I hope this helps you. please let me know.

Increasing will make it freeze harder. Is the temp warming up inside the freezer? It should be 0 to 5 above.

It is more likely the compressor going weak/bad. If it is over 5 years old, it will not be worth fixing.

If it is low on coolant, it has a leak and would have to be found before refilling. Both ways is costly!!

    Sorryfor the bad news

I would check the temp in the freezer. It should be 0 to 5 above.

You need to remember heat rises and cold air falls. The best way to load a freezer is to put meats on the bottom. They take alot longer to freeze and thaw and can save your stock if you have a power failure. Keep non-critical things like ice cream, ice, and other thing towards the top for quicker access.

Chest Freezer not freezing

check the temp dial. and set to a lower temp. *be mindful of the surrounding temp of the freezer. it will not work properly if it is in 125 degree surrounding air. * check the coils on the freezer and make sure that they are clean. this allows for proper heat transfer from the inside of the box to the outside air. also check to see if the blower is running. * Check to see if there are signs of oil around the freezer, if so contact a service tech

Plugged in the freezer full of meat, and it did not freeze...

My advice to you is to transfer the meat to another place (preferably somewhere cold, for both the sake of the meat, and your freezer), let the compressor cool down, and then try starting the freezer. If it does start (it should), let it run until it has pulled the box down to 0 F. Then add the meat back in. Note at the beginning I told you to store the meat somewhere cold. It can be quite an overloading situation for the freezer, not only to have to pull itself down to such a cold temp, but when you add a bunch of "warm" meat to the appliance it is just to much of a load for it to handle. Hope this helps

I opened my chest freezer and found everything was no longer frozen. I have had the freezer for more then 10 years in the same spot. When I started to unload the meat the motor started up. It seems to be...

Look for a thermostat near the compressor compartment, I first try setting the thermostat up and then down a few times, it may just be stuck and full of dust or dirt. Or just replace it. Very simple, only two or three wires and route the sensor into a sleave.

Believe it or not, but it is normal. Especially when just turned on. As the internal temp. gets colder so will the temp. on the side get cooler.

Some food is thawing in my chest freezer

these frigidaire made freezers are notorious for having restrictions in the sealed systems that will cause exactly what your describing.

what happens is oil moves around in the freon system and pools up in the capillary tubes and the freon is not able to flow properly. if the unit is under 5 yrs old then should be inwarranty to sears. if its over 5 then probably cheaper to purchase a new one..
