This is most likely a problem with a capacitor going back in the horizontal stage of the tv's circuit. if the tv has a horizontal knob on the front somwhere you may be able to expand the width of the picture for while but eventually the problem will continue in which case if you know someone who knows how to replace electronic components the bad capacitor(s) will need to be replaced or the tv will have to be replaced.

Tv has a 2 inch black gap both sides of it. and lines when thers a commersail tv show

This is a downfall of HD programing. Most of the commercials are not filmed in HD and this is the way the networks have decided to try and give you a better "quality" picture is to compress the lower quality signal and the result is the cropped sides. This can sometimes be overcome by adjusting the ASPECT on the TV but it does stretch out the picture and many people don't like the result. If you want to try it with your TV then there is a button on the original TV remote just under the "9" button.

Good luck...

That's good you have time and patience.
You should have service manual and electronics knowledge to recognize and test / check parts in tv.
Problem is in Pin Out area of tv and you can have new parts from Panasonic Parts.
You can buy service manual from Service Manual net
Good Luck.

My Panasonic CT-36SX31 picture has an hour shape

Take a look around (say, within 12 feet of) the TV... anything that can generate an electrical field? Microwave... refridgerator... old school stereo speakers...

Pin cushioned is a term applied to a picture that's doing what you described. Adjustments to correct that are typically found in computer monitors.

I have an identical television to yours and that adjustment isn't available. You could try degausing, but I doubt that works.
