Refrig and freezer not getting cold

Today my freezer went warm as well as my refrig. Everything in the freezer had to be thrown away. There is air coming through the vents, its not cold though.

    Vic,
The fan on the inside is working- we can feel air coming out, but its not cold. I do hear something running (whether it is the compressor or fan I am unsure). There are not any strange noises.
    Thanks~C

HI, Can you hear the compressor running? Does it click like something is trying to start but can't? It sounds like the compressor is not running. The compressor should have a 5 year warranty. They are having problems with these compressors so, you might want to call Amana and see if it is under warranty. I hope this gives you some help. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks
Vic

If you remove the rear cover on the back outside, you can tell if the compressor is running.

Did you notice any frost build up inside the freezer?

  • Anonymous May 31, 2009

Ok, If the compressor is running and both of the fams are running, you should have cold temps. If there is no frost build up or no ice building up, you should have cold. Is there any xhill at all?

It sounds like the compressor has gone bad and not pumping like it should.

Sorry.......... can fix appliances, just can't spell...... hehe

  • Anonymous May 31, 2009

it is the compressor then. Is it under five years old?

  • Anonymous May 31, 2009

Some have date on model # label

If you call the 800 # on the label, they can tell you.

You might have to pay the service cll and labor so I would check on that.

Vegetables in crisper are frozen, as well as liquids in bottom 1/2 of fridge door. The fridge & freezer temp controls won't adjust to our settings. Also, we're getting ice, but no water will dispense.

The freezer cools the refrigerator, so you actually get very cold air passing from the freezer to the refrig. The air from the freezer enters the refrig on the top and falls to the bottom where it is drawn back into the freezer. The temperature of the refrig is regulated by a thermostat and a fan that runs when the thermostat calls for cooling. If the refrig thermostat is faulty and causes the fan to run more than it should, there will be a freezing problem in the refrig at the bottom because cold air falls and warm air rises. If the refrig is thermostat is calling for cooling constantly, this will take more cold air from the freezer than is normal. Your freezer temp might be higher than normal and the refrig will be colder then desired. If the fan from the freezer is running constantly I would suspect a bad refrig thermostat.

Fridge is warm with no cold air.

Unless there are 2 thermostats, one for freezer and one for refrig, it's not the thermostat if the freezer is ok. Sounds like the small fan that blows the cold air from freezer into refrig is not operating.

If this is struggling to maintain temperature like this, either the system is low on gas (motor running all the time) or the fan has stopped which you should be able to hear. Make sure that the fan is not just jammed.also check the return air vent in the fridge as if this gets stuck with a spillage ie O.J. etc, the fridge cannot get air from the freezer and the freezer runs continually (-30) but the thermostat never cuts out in the fridge. Last idea most likely.

Water wont dispense but still makes ice. Also fridge side gets extremely cold no matter the settings and freezes stuff in the bottum drawers

Since your freezer control is the main thermostat , and your refrig control is only a damper , lower your freezer setting and turn the refrig control mid way . This will make the refrig run less , and keep the air flow moving , throughout the complete unit . When the airflow stops , by turning down the refrig control ( closing the damper ) , all the cold air will settle in the refrig section , thereby freezing everything in the lower section .
Since the water line runs thru the freezer door , too cold in the freezer section , will cause the water in the line to freeze . I would also suggest installing a dispensor heater ( pt. # WR49X10173 ) , which would hopefully avoid water line freeze , in the future . This part comes with installation instructions .

Warm in freezer and refrig

On some Amana refrigs , the defrost thermostat has to close before the fan will come on . The coils will get cold and since the bimetal clips onto the coils , it will get cold as they do . When cold enough , bimetal closes and the fan will come on . Are the coils getting cold ? If so , then the compressor is working . You could also have a bad fan motor instead of bimetal . Recheck to see if you hear the fan in freezer now .
