Question about Briggs & Stratton Garden

1 Answer

Will not run any longer than 5 min.

I have q 17.5 on my rideing mower that seams like it running out of gas. I have removed the bowl and it is full of gas, also checked the small electrical part on the bowl and it seams to go up and down. It is just not getting in the carb. Thanks Ken

You should take the carburetor off and give it a thorough cleaning. Use a Den Tek Brush, (used to clean between teeth), to clean out small portals in carb. You should also clean the brass jet hole with the brush as well. Replace any bad seals and or gaskets if it hasn't been done already. This should solve your problem.

Thanks for the rating Ken. Check the fuel lines for cracks. Old lines become brittle. Also check muffler, it may have carbon build up.

My mower will start but with some effort from me .. Once up and running it will go for about 3/5 mins then dies on me and is a struggle to get going !! I have fuel running to the carb if that helps

Pull the fuel bowl off if it has one and clean it real good and clean the fuel jet. May not be enough gas to keep it going a longer time.

Engine won't stay running. Seams to turn over fine but acts as if it is not getting fuel.

Have you checked the sediment bowl for water? Possibly there is some bad gas if you have let the mower sit for months with gas in the tank. If you empty the gas tank and start fresh. Also add about a tablespoon of acetone to a full tank . If you're having a fuel issue this will fix it. If not then the carb needs to be rebuilt.

My lt 133 john deere mower has gas in oil and back fires. runs 5 min and stops.

It's going to need a carb kit to fix the problem. Make sure your gas cap is venting ok, because gas expands in the summer and can force gas to pass thru carburetor and flood the cylinder then passing down into the oil. Depending on the age of your mower, the carburetor may have a gas shutoff solenoid on the bottom and this may have malfunctioned. Another is a bad float or needle valve which a carburetor kit would fix. A needle kit with bowl gasket may be all it will need. Hope this will help.

16hp b&s runs for 30 min or so and stops like it is out of gas. Yes the gas cap is lose and vent is not cloged

Its probably the fuel solenoid on the bottom of the float bowl. Remove it and replace with a float bowl bowl plug. You can leave the connector unpluged.

Mower only runs two min and quits

Sounds like a blocked or dirty fuel inlet.

Remove the carb bowl and work the float up and down until gas flow improves. Be gentle! Just a little light pressure from beneath and the float should swing up about a quarter inch.

The short run is due to the carb bowl not refilling fast enough to keep up with full throttle demand.

Make sure when you put the carb bowl back on there arent any fuel leaks before trying to run the mower.

Good luck and be careful!

Remove the bottom bowl of the carberator and replace the needle-valve and float - cleaning this area as you do so.  Sounds like the float has a hole in it or the needle valve in the carb is sticking.  Use some fuel stabilizer prior to storing for winter next time, if not the old gas turns to shellac and makes things stick.

My mower will run for a bit then start dieing

Sounds like there may be trash in the carb. when the gas bowl is full it runs until the gas runs out then it dies. Take the breather off get it started and then put you hand over the intake on the carb. sometimes this will allow the trash to be sucked on through do this several times take your hand off before the motor shuts down and then do it again until you clear it up. If this does not fix the problem you can take the bowl off the carb an see if it is getting fuel with the float hanging down this opens up the needle valve to let gas fill the bowl. there should be a steady stream of gas coming out. when the bowl fills up the float floats up and closes the needle valve. If there is not a steady stream of fuel coming out with the float hanging down with the bowl off you may have to remove the float and needle valve and clean out the needle valve jet with something like a sewing needle. If you are getting gas steady and fire to the plug it should run.

Gas in the oil in my craftsman 17.5 riding mower

You have a bad antibackfire valve. It is located on carburator below the fuel bowl. You can replace it, or as I advise others, install an inline shutoff valve. Turn the fuel valve on to start it, then turn it off when you shut the engine down.

Mower runs for 10-15 mins. then shuts off.

Check your gas cap. There must be a vent for the gas to flow joedog
