Question about Quicksilver Computers & Internet

Kernal panic My G4 Quicksilver Mac Tower starts with a black screen and says "kernal panic" then freezes. I've tested each memory chip and reset the PRam. Someone told me to reset the VRam? Sometimes it starts and runs fine. When I try to install the OS (Tiger) again, it won't read the disc? Any ideas? Thanks Jeff

Hello,

To reset nvram,
Press "cmd alt O F" at startup
Then enter:
reset_nvram (press enter)
reset_all (press enter)

A kernel panic can come from a lot of things (peripherals, corrupted file, or damaged hard drive or memory). The best is to check in the log file what caused the kernel panic, or to proceed step by step, checking one thing after the other, until the problem is resolved.

I started getting kernal panics every time I restarted my Mac Pro 1,1. I ran a hardware test and there was no problems found in the short or long test. I attempted to restore the OS using the original CD...

Your Mac may not support mountain lion. The fact it booted off disk means it will run 10.7 but not necessarily 10.8. I suggest you try installing lion (10.7) and try again. Also replace battery on motherboard and push the little red button close to it.

Kernal panic. Now can't get past user window. File vault will not open and sfe mode or regular mode i get the same results. Accepts password but computer will not open.

Boot from OS cd or Disk Warrior and try repairing the drive. First place I'd start.

Let me know if that solves your issue before we move on.

I tried to hook up my power mac g4 tower to a monitor and the screen is not coming on. It states monitor is on, now connect to computer.

Really, the only way to troubleshoot this problem is to connect your display to another computer and see if it functions; then connect your computer to another display and see if it functions. Once you have determined which unit isn't working correctly, you can proceed from there.

Kernal panic alert screen will not respond

Well, if you erase the wrong files, you'll sure get a kernel panic.
To power down your PowerBook when there is a kernel panic on the screen (or any frozen state) you have to hold the power button for 10-15 seconds until the Mac shuts off. Then you can restart it.
If you deleted too many of the wrong files, it may not restart to your satisfaction. :-(

I have a Apple PowerMac G4 with around 384MB-512MB of ram. currently when i power it up it comes up with a flashing folder with a question mark. my problem is that after i put in my OSXTiger disk...it...

My kernal panics we RAM related, if possible, make sure they are seated properly. The ? means it can't find a bootable start up drive. If you have another mac, join it by firewire and start up the new mac, holding down the letter "T" key. then see if you can start up from that disk (now in "Target mode" using System Prefferences -> Start up disk. Then run Disk Repair from Utilities -> Disk Utility. This might help. Otherwise it might be a logic board problem.

My G4 Power Book won't start up.

myhotspot,

I think you are experienceing the same problem I had with my Powerbook G4. I would get the single beep, followed by the pulsing white light (2 flashes). The single beep indicates no memory is detected by the machine and the double flash with the white light is related. Apple eventually replaced my memory banks even though I was past the 1 year warranty period because it was a "known" problem with some of the G4s.

As a short term solution, you may want to try swapping your installed memory to the unused slot.

Freeze on loading screen

Hello Minnie,

The last official firmware for the original R4 was v1.18, the R4 SDHC needed different firmware as it's from a different manufacturer. You need the 1.34 software available from this download page if you have the real black box one: R4 Firmware

That should fix your problems.
