How to reinstall windows xp thinkpad x41

How to Reload Windows XP Without Removing Files Deleting system files, modifying the registry and installing incompatible drivers to Windows XP can damage the integrity of the operating system, rendering it inoperable. Virus infections are often responsible for making the aforementioned changes to a system, but employees who have administrative access to the workstation can make deleterious modifications to the OS as well. Reinstalling Windows XP can repair the OS, but if work-related files are stored to the system partition, all of the data will be erased during the installation process. To reload Windows XP without losing files, you can perform an in-place upgrade, also known as a repair installation.

Step 1
Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive and then press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart the computer. Step 2Press any key when prompted to load the contents of the disc. Press "Enter" on the Welcome to Setup screen.
Step 3 Read the license agreement, pressing "PgDn" to scroll down the page. Press "F8" to agree to the terms. The CD will search for previous installations of Windows XP. Step 4
Press "R" to repair the selected operating system. The disc will begin reinstalling the operating system to the hard drive without affecting personal files. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the repair installation. Step 5
Log in to Windows XP and sign on to the Internet when installation completes. Click "Start," "All Programs" and then "Windows Update." Step 6
Click "Scan for Updates" to search for applicable service packs and hotfixes to reinstall to the OS. Step 7
Click "Install Now" to bring the in-place upgrade up-to-date.
Things Needed
  • Windows XP CD

Tip
  • Make sure you have your Windows XP product key (found on the CD cover or on the computer case) available prior to reinstallation.

Warnings
  • If possible, back up your files previous to the installation in case something goes awry during the process.
  • You will need to reinstall all non-native programs and removable devices after performing an in-place upgrade.

Hi,
You need a Factory restore CD. It May be, that The VGA Driver ( Graphics ) Is Not Installed With Vista et,c. Although Vista/7 et,c does have A Large Driver Database. It,s always possible, That The Graphics chip, hasn,t been Recognised At setup.
Possibly Downloaded A Corrupt Version Of O/S.

OK, you don't need to format. You can insert the CD and restart. You can ask to install but then the computer will say you already have a OS installed. You can press R to repair the OS. Your computer may have a recovery method. Some vendors don't give you a CD but recovery system is fed into a separate partition of the hard disk. See the documentation and check whether you have such a system.
Please feel free to ask for advice any time.
Repairing a OS is quite safe. You will not loose any software or updates.
Remember, don't press R at the first screen where you are given a chance to go to recovery console. There is very little you could do there. First ask to install then ask to repair the existing one.
After repairing the system, the first thing you need to do is to install a reliable Antivirus Software.

Need help in formatting or recovery the os.... can anyone help me on it

If you have the original OS disks, you can boot to the CD drive and install a fresh copy of Windows XP. One of the steps will ask you if you want to keep the existing Operating system. If you decline and install the OS the next step will ask if you want to format using NTFS. This step will format the drive and then reinstall the OS.

I hope this is what you were looking for. Thanks for using FixYa.

I want to format my drive but it say's os loader cant load

you have to use a boot up disk or boot up to safe mode with command prompt and have a boot disk to format a drive that is XP or Me or Server2000 or 2004 or simply use your system install disk to format the drive before reinstalling system, you can do a destructive install which will allow you to format it that way. However I prefer to have a boot disk and boot to a windows 95 or 98se disk and boot to a floppy or a CD. Problem with this is if you have old drivers you will lose all driver information if you don't back up drivers. if you have old components it will be a pain in your backside to load all the new drivers.
The up side is you destroy all disk information including any identifying information on the disk you start with a Cleon disk and can add a disk partition to install your O.S. on and your drivers. This is not to hard to do but for a first time person you have to know the sequence to do it in. If you want to know how to do this let me know and I will give you the instructions in the exact order to do it the latter way. Thanks for using Fix-ya and hope this helps.
