Fuel hose routing problem on a Mac 3200 Chainsaw

I have a Mccoulough 3516 Chainsaw. I tried to fire it up after a good while of not using it and the primer bulb cracked and gas spilled out. I removed the primer assmbly and underneath found 2 hoses. One was cracked off and the other cracked as soon as I tried to remove it from the primer assembly. I am a persistent individual and after removing 12 screws I got to the point where I had a clear look at the carburetor assembly and there are 2 places where fuel lines attach. I need to know which goes where. I stopped short of removing the flywheel/starter thingy so I am not sure of how the hose hooks to the fuel tank, although I see a filter on the parts list so I assume the filter goes inside the tank. I downloaded an illustrated parts list and where this is helpful, it does not show how these are routed. In addition, on the opposite side of the engine there is another hose connection close to the chain oil reservoir. Is this a hose connection for the chain oil system? I usually can figure stuff like this out, but when all the hoses are cracked and in pieces, I am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated Mac 3200 series, 32 or 38cc I have what may be a similar problem ---at least similar in that I don't know where the hoses go. Let's try this question: Does the hose from the bottom of the tank go to the primer bulb or to the carb? Mine had the short hose from the carb going into the IN side of the primer bulb, meaning that it would **** from the carb, not the tank. Was this correct? I changed it! Then there's another hose which goes from the carb on the opposite side of the throttle and choke levers to the tank. Is that an overflow, or is it really the main fuel supply hose? My hoses, too, were broken off so don't know exactly where they go. Keith

    Thanks, #1 Taper.

So this is the flow of fuel then, correct?

Into fuel filter at bottom of tank, through hose to carb on the opposite side of the throttle and choke levers.

Another hose comes out of the carb on the same side as the levers and goes to the primer bulb. Does the primer bulb "****" or "blow" on this short hose?

Then from the primer bulb, there's another hose which goes to the tank. Does it pick up fuel from the tank, or return overflow fuel to the tank?

I can't tell, because the hose appears to be broken off due to deterioration.

    thanks,
    Keith

Thanks, Jim. I think that will solve my problem. It appears that my pick-up hose was broken off inside but at the top of the tank.

No wonder it wouldn't **** gas!

    Thanks a bunch!
    Keith

This post helped me with my McCulloch Mac 3216 chainsaw. There are two holes in the gas tank - one above the other. One is for the gas line (with the filter on the end) and the other is for the overflow - a simply line that runs from the "out" nipple on the primer bulb into the gas tank. The filtered fuel line goes to the nipple on the back of the carb. Another short line goes from the "in" nipple on the primer bulb to the nipple on the front of the carb.

There are two notches just out from the two holes in the gas tank for holding the lines that go in -- this may help you locate the holes.

I found it helpful to pull the lines that go into the gas tank out through the gas cap hole and leave them hanging out until the housing was reassembled. I also left the lines that plug into the primer bulb hanging out through the hole where the bulb goes until the housing was put back on. Leave plenty of extra line for the lines going out to the primer bulb. Once the housing is in place, cut the lines to the primer bulb and attach them, and slip the lines into the tank, making sure the ends are as far down in the tank as possible. You will need this extra "slack" to work with the housing to get it back on.

The fuel line goes from the bottom of the tank to carb. The other fuel line goes to the primer bulb.

Yes, the primer bulb fuel line serves two purposes. It draws thru the carb. when priming, and serves as an overflow while the chainsaw is running.

Mac 3516 chainsaw won't start

Electronic ignition units work off speed of rotation so make sure yoy are cranking the engine fast enough, make sure the plug is well earthed against the cylinder whilst cranking, make sure the switch is in the on position, if there is still no spark you will have to replace the unit.

A helpful video, a few of my suggestions, and a schematic follow:
Fuel Line Replacement by SmallEng.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrXpU70Hmi0
  • The hose in the tank with the filter on the free end connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
  • If the saw is equipped with a primer bulb, an output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill as it inflates).
  • The pressure side of the primer returns displaced fuel to the tank as it is depressed.
Take lots of notes and a few digital photographs to help with reassembly.
