Question about HP (346789-001) CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
I am unable to use DVD -R in my drive for burning. They read fine but won't write. Not sure if I need additional drivers and or how to do it without risking overall function of the drive. The blank DVD -R that I bought are Nexxtech brand and comes with a notice to visit a web address to assure compatibility and maximum speed between the drive or recorder and this disc media but I have no clue what to do once I get there. hppt://rpc1.org (upgrade your hardware's firmware) I've got the same problem. I just tried to burn dvd files to a NEXXTECH DVD-R. I kept getting an error message. I've burned hundreds of DVD-Rs of other brands with no problems. What's the deal?
How old is this thing? (but many work okay)
down load IMGBURN (Free)
btw, old old DRIVES are mostly bad now.
so if one brand is, bad only , then that brand is no good
or using the wrong burn speed.
imgburn, try it, win.
get it ONLY at imgburn.com
no where else or will be a virus.

Don't wanna sound like a Doomsayer but I think it has burned its last burn...
Try to clean it first, if it still doesn't work, then it is time for a new one.
Had a similar experience and we found out that the drive had conked out.

You guys are crazy, another person trying to send someone to a repair guy to make money off us when in fact it would be cheaper just to buy a new one. I have the same issue with the same model 740b and this is driving me crazy I have been to a 100 different post andI will tell you what no one has a clue what they are talking about. Oh, restart the system upgrade your firmware, delete your reg file, its all BS. I have did everything in the book and this is what I have come up with. My drive reads some dvd disc I have created but any ISO or Auto play disc it doesnt even see it just keeps trying to load and thats it. So in my opinion HP or Compaq sent a update that did not require you to accept or approve and it updated the firmware with some info about allowing to use writen ISO or autoplay disc. Because it would seem to help with the cutting down of pirated software but the only issue is that if the software is an individuals and they copied it for their own use, who are they to intefere with our equipment. I may be wrong but it just seems kind of funny that every one is stating that this all happened around the same time. So in closing if you dont know the remedy do not suggest to send to a repair shop because you are an idiot then.

Try different medias. If it does burn then your media is incompatible. If it does not, check your dvddrive software and hardware. You could use other burning software to check if it is software. Check the status of your hardware in device manager and bios.
Clean its lens using lens cleaner. You can uninstalled and reinstall it.Having all and still it doesn't write, then it is due for replacement.
