My 2006 nissan quest is having a bad smell-come out of the a/c when it is first turned on. Then the smell goes away. It also occurs when the heat is turned on
Do you leave your climate control in the Auto position. This is bad. What happens is the evaporator which is located in the vents never dries out and you begin to grow mold. Does it smell musty, locker room type smell.
Also since it came out the heat vent it could also be a leaking heater core. Check you coolant level and reservior. If low this is an indication heater core is leaking. It may not of leaked enough to tell but usually these are the only reason the vents would smell unless a rodent ended up there and died.

It could be one of 2 things. Frist see if there are any codes stored in the computer. You proable have bad cam sensors. they are located oin the back of each cylinder head. therre is no way to testthem. You will just have to trust me. I am 90% sure that is what it is.
The exhaust leak is almost always broken studs on the exhaust manifolds. It makes a tick noise when cold and usually goes away when the engine warms up. After a year or so, the noise doesn't go away.
Your heater-a/c air intake is at the base of the windshield through the screen on the passenger side. WHen the exhaust leaks from the manifold, the exhaust gas gets sucked into the air intake.
You can put the heater in recirc mode and it will draw air in from inside the car instead of though the outside air intake. You can't leave it in recirc for long in winter or your car will get ice or fogging on the windows from too much humidity. Take it off recirc after 10 minutes.
What type of smell is it? If it is a damp, stagnant water odor, you would need to flush out the cowl (the vented area under your wipers)
You can pour some chemicals in there that will kill the fungus, etc. growing in there that are causing the odor.
Do a websearch for "cleaning cowl"
Hope this helps.
