Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

1 Answer

Kenmore Washer has Elect smell; no pump, spin, or agitate.

8 yr old Kenmore direct drive stopped today with a medium elect smell. Timer advances but washer only hums at the spin spot. Removed cabinet. Pump/motor area does not smell or show black residue. Smell related to top console area but I can't point to any single switch or control. How can I troubleshoot ? I have a multimeter standing by.
Unit fills OK but must be trained by hand. Thanks a lot. JB

My Kenmore Elite washer does not spin/wash, it fills the water tank but does not start the cycle!

Check the lid switch first - if this switch isn't working the machine won't agitate or spin.

If the lid switch is ok, and the machine will not agitate or spin, the most likely cause is a broken direct drive motor coupling that will require dismantling the washer and replacement of the defective component. You may hear an odd sound coming from underneath the washer as it tries to operate. Also, if the machine just won't agitate, but WILL spin, then the agitator "dogs" are worn out. They can be accessed by removing the top of the agitator and unscrewing the cam assembly.

If you are uncomfortable performing this type of work, it's best to call for service. Above all, if you elect to service the machine yourself, be sure to unplug the machine first. You can also turn off the water supply to the machine but this is not required for this operation.

Washer won't agitate. New transmission...new timer.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Top load, direct drive Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a reversing motor.

It turns one way for agitating and reverses for draining and spinning.

It sounds as if either the motor is shot or one of the connectors is bad.

As a place to start, see the Whirlpool Service manuasl (with wiring diagrams) for their top load, direct drive washers.

Will not stop agitating, timer will not advance

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.20922990

As you say, I'd also suspect that the timer is not advancing.

Following is the Whirlpool / Kenmore service manual for top load, direct drive washers.

Washier 70 series,

Assuming that this is a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive neutral drain machine.

See the Sears parts list for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and a list of sub components will come up.

This type uses a reversing motor to directly drive the drain pump and the transmission in spin mode.

If the machine agitates, the motor and transmission are probably OK.

If the Timer, doesn't send the signal to the motor to Reverse, neither the pump, nor spin will occur. Therefore, it seems as if it is a timer problem.

The smell may be coming from a part called a Motor Coupler.

This device has three parts, two of them are plastic with prongs. Each of them slides onto shafts on the motor and transmission. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes used to line up the prongs and as a fail safe. If the motor or transmission jams, the rubber piece will break saving the motor and transmission.

I'd also look at a Whirlpool installation and maintenance document which describes how the washer works in great detail.

End of wash cycle, no draining or spinning, but can move to rinse cycle and it agitates again, no spinning after rinse either

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The drain and spin functions are started when the timer advances to the spin mode.

The motor is reversible. When agitating, the motor spins one way, when going to the drain / spin mode it reverses.

Since the machine agitates, the problem points to the timer.

Not sure if manifold is leaking

Leaks water...check the pump first. The fill valve and hoses may be the next step. See how to take apart info. With the use of plastic drain hoses on many machines today, this has become a common leak trouble maker. The drain hose can rub the wall or a pipe and this will rub a hole in the drain hose.

Kenmore Washer 70 Series - sheets stuck around agitator

The transmission probably stripped the worm gear that drives the drum - you would have to crack it open and take a peek.

Washer fills/agitates and stops prior to draining

If pump works fine or still pumps out water, then it is a timer malfunction. Replace the timer and you should be fine. To locate a part number for your timer, refer to www3.sears.com with the model number off your washer.

Kenmore agitates, but no spin or drain

Your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley you should remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate its pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely(frozen or stiff) it should be replaced. In case of a broken pump's belt or belt looks quite worn, replace it. In any case, check the pump's pulley before you replacing the belt. Good luck !
